Viewing automation policy runs

The History page shows the status of all the policies run in BMC Helix Intelligent Automation and allows you to view output details of any policy run instance. 

To view policy runs

Click History and view the following information:

• Total number of successful, running, and failed automation policies widgets
• Start date and time
• Policy name
• Instance ID of the policy run
• Execution Mode
• Status
• Duration taken for the policy run

To view additional details about a policy run, click a policy name and the Policy Details dialog box appears, which shows the actions executed during the policy instance execution in the left pane, and status of the action and other details in the right pane in JSON format. For a failed policy, the Policy Details box dialog displays the reason for the failure in the right pane. 

Policies that consist of Ansible Tower and BMC Helix Innovation Studio actions execute the actions asynchronously. Hence, after the actions are executed in the applications, the policy details dialog box shows the updated status.

Timeout and retention period

A policy run fails if one or more actions included in the policy fail or time out. By default, the timeout period for an action is two days.

Default retention period for a failed or successful policy instance is 90 days. After 90 days, these instances are deleted, and no longer displayed on the Policy Runs page.

To search for policy runs

For a basic search, enter the policy name or the complete instance ID. The search results start appearing as you type the policy name (minimum three characters) or the instance ID. 

For an advanced search, perform the following steps: 

1. Click Advanced filter and do one of the following options: 
   • From the available filters, select a filter and choose the filter options:
     • Start Date/Time
     • Execution Mode
     • Status
     • Policy Tags: Requires a key-value pair to search based on the tags added to a policy.
       For more information about tags, see Creating automation policies.  
   • Enter the filter name in the text field, or to build a search expression, type the filter name and select the option from the list of available options. 
     For example, if you start typing Status, status options appear. 
2. Click Apply filters.
   The policy runs that match your filters appear. The numbers in the total number widgets also change based on the specified filters.
