Modeling services

As a service designer, you can create service models by using the BMC Helix AIOps. You can create service models by using the following options:

To create a service model

Perform the following instructions to create a service model:

  1. Click Services and click
    The Create New Service page is displayed.
  2. Click  to define the following service details:
    1. Specify the service name.
    2. (Optional) Select service criticality from the list to mark the business importance of the service. By default, no criticality is assigned.
    3. (Optional) Click Add Dynamic content to add dynamic service components such as blueprints to the service. For more information, see Modeling service blueprints.
    4. (Optional) Click Add Static content to add static service components such as configuration items (CIs) to the service.
      Note: Either a dynamic or static content is essential for defining a valid service model. You can define both.
    5. (Optional) Click Add Health Indicator and add the metrics and define alarm policies for those metrics.
      Note: Defining health indicators is required for monitoring the service predictions.
    6. Assign one or more labels as key value pairs to the service. You can create new keys and values or select from the existing list of keys and values. By default, no label is assigned.
      You can add a maximum of 10 labels. These labels are added to the Advanced filter list in the Services page.
    7. (Optional) View content. 
    8. Save and close.
  3. (Optional) Click  to add additional services as part of the service model and repeat steps from 2 a to 2 f.
  4. (Optional) Repeat step 4.
  5. (Optional) Flip the service direction.
  6. (Optional) Remove element from hierarchy. 
    • Hover over on top of a service for which you want to remove child or parent services, right-click, and select Remove element from hierarchy.
      The selected element is deleted.

    • (Alternatively) Hover over on top of the arrow between two elements, right-click, and select Remove element from hierarchy.
      The selected element is deleted.
  7. Save and close.

To add dynamic content to a service model

Perform the following instructions to add service blueprints to a service model:

Can I use the same blueprint multiple times?

- The same blueprint cannot be used more than once in a service model.

- You can use the same blueprint in different service models.

- You can use a combination of blueprints in same and different service models.

  1. Click Add Dynamic content.
    The Add Dynamic content page is displayed. 
  2. Select a Blueprint from the list.
  3. Select one or more Namespaces, Key for Namespaces, Host, or any other custom-configuration.

  4. Add the configuration and save.

To add static content to a service model

Perform the following instructions to add CIs to a service model:

  1. Click Add Static content.
    The Add Static content page is displayed. 
  2. Click Add CIs to Service to add CIs from the list.
  3. (Optional) Click Add (incl. related) if you want to include all the related objects with the selected CIs or Click Add to add only the selected CIs without related objects.
  4. Close to view the service model.
  5. (Optional) Change the display to Organic or Hierarchic view.
  6. Save the changes.

To add health indicators to a service model

Perform the following instructions to add metrics from the CIs and configure alarm policies to a service model:

Health indicators for Service Predictions

The service designers must define the health indicators before monitoring the service predictions. For more information on monitoring service predictions, see Monitoring service predictions.

  1. Click Add Health Indicators.
    The Define Health Indicator page is displayed. 
  2. Do one of the following:
    • If you have added Dynamic or Static content with CIs that has metrics to select, you can select Metrics applicable for this Service Content.
    • Select All Available Metrics to view the list of all metrics.
  3. Select a CI Category, CI Kind, and Metric Source.

    Note

    The CI Category, CI Kind, and Metric Source fields are enabled only if the CIs have metrics to display. 


  4. From list of Metric Types displayed, expand and select a CI Name. You can select more than one Type and more than one CI Names.
  5. Click Add Metric.
    The Added Metrics section displays the list of all metrics with either Edit Policy or Create Policy button. For more information on creating or editing an alarm policy, see  Configuring alarm policies. Open link

  6. (Optional) Click Create Policy or Edit Policy to add or update the alarm policy.

    Alarm Generation Condition added by default

    Clicking Create Policy launches a Create Alarm Policy page and Edit Policy launches an Update Alarm Policy page in BMC Helix Operations Management.

    Both the Create Alarm Policy and Edit Policy pages include the metric name as the instance name in the Alarm Generation Condition by default. In addition, the Edit Policy page may contain additional details for the metric based on an earlier edit.

To view the service details

Perform the following instructions to view the details of a specific service model:

  1. Click Services.
  2. In the search field, type the name of the service you want to view and click search.
    The service is displayed as a tile.
  3. Click the tile to view the service details.
    For more information, see Monitoring services.

To edit a service model

Perform the following instructions from the Services page to edit a service model:

Note

You can only edit the services created using BMC Helix AIOps. Service created in BMC Helix Discovery cannot be edited using this procedure.

  1. Search and select a service you want to edit.
    The service details page is displayed.
  2. Click the and click .
    The Edit Service page is displayed.
  3. Click to define the following service details:
    1. Specify the service name.
    2. (Optional) Change the service criticality from the list to mark the business importance of the service. By default, no critically is assigned.
    3. (Optional) Click Add Dynamic content to add more components or to modify the specific dynamic service components such as Blueprints to the service. 
    4. (Optional) Click Add Static content to add or Edit Static content to modify the static service components such as configuration items (CIs) to the service.
      Note: Either a dynamic or static content is essential for defining a valid service model. You can define both.
    5. (Optional) Click Add Health Indicator and add the metrics or  the expander icon to view and edit the health indicators and define alarm policies for those metrics.
      Note: Defining health indicators is required for monitoring the service predictions.
    6. (Optional) Assign one or more labels as key value pairs to the service. You can create new keys and values or select from the existing list of keys and values. By default, no label is assigned.
      These labels are added to the Advanced filter list in the Services page.
    7. (Optional) View content.
    8. Save and close.
  4. (Optional) Repeat steps from 3a to 3f for additional services in the model.
  5. (Optional) To add more services to the model, click  and repeat steps from 3a to 3f.
  6. (Optional) Flip the service direction.
  7. (Optional) Remove element from hierarchy. 
    • Hover over on top of a service for which you want to remove child or parent services, right-click, and select Remove element from hierarchy.
      The selected element is deleted.

    • (Alternatively) Hover over on top of the arrow between two elements, right-click, and select Remove element from hierarchy.
      The selected element is deleted.
  8. Save and close.

To edit dynamic content of a service model

Perform the following instructions from the Edit Service page > Define Service view:

  1. From the Dynamic composition section, click for a listed dynamic content entry.
  2. The Edit Content page is displayed. 
  3. Select a Blueprint from the list.
  4. Select one or more Namespaces, Key for Namespaces, Host, or any other custom-configuration.

  5. Add the configuration and save.
  6. (Optional) Repeat steps from 1 to 5 for additional parent or child services in the model.

To edit static content of a service model

Perform the following instructions from the Edit Service page > Define Service view:

  1. Click on a service to edit.
    The Define Service page is displayed.
  2. From the Static composition section, click Edit Static content.
    The Edit Static content page is displayed. 
  3. Click Add CIs to Service to add CIs from the list.
  4. (Optional) Click Add (incl. related) if you want to include all the related objects with the selected CIs or Click Add to add only the selected CIs without related objects.
  5. Close to view the service model.
  6. (Optional) Change the display to Organic or Hierarchic view.
  7. Save the changes.
  8. (Optional) Repeat steps from 1 to 7 for additional parent or child services in the model.

To edit health indicators of a service model

Perform the following instructions from the Edit Service page > Define Service view:

Health indicators for Service Predictions

  1. Expand Health Indicators.
    The Configuration section is displayed with all the metrics configured.
  2. Click Action against the metric of your choice.
  3. Click Edit.
  4. (Optional) Select Metrics Applicable for this Service Content to modify the existing configuration or All Available Metrics to view the list and add more metrics.

    Note

    The CI Category, CI Kind, and Metric Source fields are enabled only if the CIs have metrics to display. 


  5. (Optional) From list of Metric Types displayed, expand and select one or more CIs. You can select more than one type and more than one CIs.
  6. (Optional) Click Add Metrics.
    The Added Metrics section displays the list of all metrics with either Edit Policy or Create Policy button. For more information on creating or editing an alarm policy, see  Configuring alarm policies. Open link
  7. (Optional) Click Create Policy or Edit Policy to add or update the alarm policy.

    Alarm Generation Condition added by default

    Clicking Create Policy launches a Create Alarm Policy page and Edit Policy launches an Update Alarm Policy page respectively in BMC Helix Operations Management.

    Both the Create Alarm Policy and Edit Policy pages include the metric name as the instance name in the Alarm Generation Condition by default. In addition, the Edit Policy page may contain additional details for the metric based on an earlier edit.

To delete a service model

Perform the following instructions from the Entitles page:

Note

You can only delete the services created using BMC Helix AIOps. Service created in BMC Helix Discovery cannot be deleted using this procedure.


  1. Search and select a service you want to delete.
    The service details page is displayed.
  2. Click the and click .
  3. Click Proceed to delete.

To delete dynamic content to a service model

Perform the following step from the Edit Service page > Define Service view:

  1. From the Dynamic composition section, click to delete a dynamic content.
  2. (Optional) Repeat the above step for deleting additional dynamic contents.
  3. Save the changes.
  4. (Optional) Repeat steps from 1 to 3 for additional parent or child services in the model.

To delete CIs from a static content of a service model

Perform the following instructions from the Edit Service page > Define Service view:

  1. From the Dynamic composition section, click Edit Static content.
    The Edit Static content page is displayed. 
  2. Select a CI from the hierarchy, right-click, and select Delete.
  3. (Optional) Repeat steps 2 and 3 for deleting additional CIs.
  4. Save the changes.
  5. (Optional) Repeat steps from 1 to 4 for additional parent or child services in the model.

To delete health indicator of a service model

Perform the following instructions from the Edit Service page:

  1. Expand Health Indicators.
    The Configuration section is displayed with all the metrics configured.
  2. Click Action against the metric of your choice.
  3. Click Delete.
  4. (Optional) Repeat steps 2 and 3 for deleting additional metrics.
  5. Save the changes.
  6. (Optional) Repeat steps from 1 to 5 for additional parent or child services in the model.

To add a child or parent service to a service model

Perform the following instructions from the Entitles page:

You can only edit the services created using BMC Helix AIOps. Service created in BMC Helix Discovery cannot be edited using this procedure.

  1. Search and select a service you want to edit. 
    The service details are displayed.
  2. Click the and click .
    The Edit Service page is displayed.
  3. On the Edit Service page, you can view the service service model.
    For more information, see Service modeling and blueprints.
  4. Hover over on top of a service you want to add child or parent services, right-click, and select Add Child Service or Add Parent Service.
    The services are added either as a child or parent service.
  5. (Optional) Repeat steps 3 and 4 as many times required for each service in the model.

To view a child or parent service of a service model

Perform the following instructions from the Entitles page:

You can only edit the services created using BMC Helix AIOps. Service created in BMC Helix Discovery cannot be edited using this procedure.

  1. Search and select a service you want to edit. 
    The service details are displayed.
  2. Click the and click .
    The Edit Service page is displayed.
  3. Click on a service to edit.
    The Define Service page is displayed.
  4. From the Dependencies section , you can view the number of parent and child services for the selected service.
  5. Click on the icons to view the details.
    The All Parent and Child Services view is displayed with the name and CI kinds for each parent and child services.

To delete an element from the hierarchy of a service model

Perform the following instructions from the Entitles page:

You can only edit the services created using BMC Helix AIOps. Service created in BMC Helix Discovery cannot be edited using this procedure.

  1. Search and select a service you want to edit. 
    The service details are displayed.
  2. Click the and click .
    The Edit Service page is displayed.
  3. Do one of the following:
    • Hover over on top of a service for which you want to remove child or parent services, right-click, and select Remove element from hierarchy.
      The selected element is deleted.

    • (Alternatively) Hover over on top of the arrow between two elements, right-click, and select Remove element from hierarchy.
      The selected element is deleted.

  4. Save the changes.
  5. (Optional) Repeat steps 3 and 4 as many times required for each parent service in the model.
