BMC Remedy solution 18.08 benchmarking lab and solution deployment

The deployment architecture of BMC Remedy ITSM Suite Solution benchmark is illustrated in the following figure:

Warning

Note

Because the RSSO application is deployed on each tomcat instance hosting the mid-tier application, the RSSO Server is not shown in the diagram illustrated in the previous section. RSSO is deployed as a standalone service.

Remedy solution stack deployment details

All the hardware, except the database server, are virtualized. Each virtual machine (VM) hosts a deployed instance. The details of the deployed instance are as follows:

BMC Remedy AR System server

BMC Remedy AR System server is built using the Java technology platform. This means each BMC Remedy AR server is hosted on a Java Virtual Machine (JVM). The JVM needs to be tuned specifically to the behaviour of the AR Server for best performance.

For this benchmark, there are two VMs, with each hosting one AR Server. The AR Servers are configured in a server group environment.

BMC Remedy Mid-Tier and Remedy RSSO

The clustered mid-tier consists of two or more VMs depending on the workload. Each VM hosts a tomcat instance. The tomcat instances are configured as a cluster for HA.

Warning

Note

  • Only web applications deployed with the <distributable/> attribute have session replication in a tomcat cluster.
  • On each tomcat instance, mid-tier web application is deployed with the <distributable /> flag. For the second RSSO benchmark case where each tomcat hosts both the mid-tier and RSSO, a RSSO web application is deployed without the <distributable /> flag.
  • RSSO does not need session replication because all the deployed instances share the same database where the sessions are stored.

BMC Remedy Smart Reporting

The Smart Reporting Server is a single VM. There is no clustering. All AR Servers use this instance for reporting.

Microsoft SQL server 2012 database server

Microsoft SQL server (2012 Enterprise Edition) hosts the tenant's AR system databases, RSSO database, and one smart reporting database. The lab SQL server machine has 20 cores and 512 GB RAM. However, test results show that 2 cores (each core has 2 logical processors, thus 4 logical processors in total) and 32 GB RAM is sufficient to support 2 tenants mixed workload (600 online users in total).

The SQL server machine is configured with 1 local HDD and 3 LUN devices. The three LUN devices are backed by Hitachi VSP G1000:
