Viewing an SNMP managed device

An SNMP managed device object in BMC Discovery can represent a rack system, UPS, network analysis module, environmental monitoring unit, or other device that supports SNMP management. SNMP managed devices are discovered using SNMP credentials. A valid credential is required to create an SNMP-Managed-Device-node.

To view an SNMP managed device

  1. From the main menu, select Explore > Data.
    The Infrastructure page opens.

  2. In the Network & Printers section, click SNMP Managed Devices.
  3. Select an SNMP managed device from the list.

The following screen illustrates a typical example of a discovered SNMP managed device.

The information fields for a discovered SNMP managed device object are arranged in the following groups:

  • General Details—General information about the device such as its name, type, and model. For more information, see General Details.
  • Identity—Information about Serial number, system name, system object ID. For more information, see Identity.
  • Ownership & Location—Information about the ownership and location of the host. For more information, see Ownership & Location.
  • Operating System—The Operating system information for this SNMP managed device. For more information, see Operating System.
  • Infrastructure—Information about the network interfaces, and IP addresses (IPv4 and IPv6) that the SNMP managed device uses. For more information, see Infrastructure.
  • Inference—The inference details. For more information, see Inference.
  • CMDB Synchronization—Information about the last CMDB synchronization operations and the number of CIs corresponding to this SNMP managed device at the last CMDB synchronization.

Note

You can also display provenance information by clicking the Show Provenance button. Provenance information is meta-information describing how the other information came to exist. For more information, see Provenance Information.

General Details

The following table lists information fields that can be displayed in the General Details group for a SNMP managed device.

Field name

Details

Name

The name of the SNMP managed device—If no name is discovered then this is the IP address of the device.

Type

The type of SNMP managed device, such as UPS, Network Infrastructure, or Remote Access Controller.

Vendor

The vendor of the SNMP managed device.

Model

The model name of the SNMP managed device.

Status

Whether the exact SNMP device has been tested by BMC; can be one of the following:

  • EXACT—BMC has tested the SNMP queries used to discover this device on a device of exactly this model.
  • SIMILAR—BMC has tested the SNMP queries used to discover this device on a device that is similar, but not identical, to this device. For example, the queries might have been tested on a device from the same family of devices from the same vendor, but not on this exact model.
  • Customer—The queries used to discover this device were contributed by a member of the BMC Discovery community.

Identity

The following table lists information fields that can be displayed in the Identity group for a SNMP managed device object.

Field name

Details

Serial ID

The serial number of the SNMP managed device.

System Name

The sysname of the SNMP managed device.

System Object ID

The SNMP System Object ID of the SNMP managed device.

Endpoint Used To Be Identified As

If the endpoint used to discover this SNMP managed device was previously identified as a different entity, a link to that entity and a link to a comparison with that entity are provided.

Endpoint Now Identified As

If the endpoint used to discover this SNMP managed device is now identified as a different entity, a link to that entity and a link to a comparison with that entity are provided.

Ownership & Location

The following table lists information fields that can be displayed in the Ownership & Location group for a host object.

Field name

Details

Organizational Unit

The Organizational Unit that this element belongs to.

Business Owner

The person or owner responsible for this element from a business perspective.

IT Owner

The person or owner responsible for this element from an IT perspective.

Support Manager

The person or owner responsible for the support of this element.

Location

Location of this element.

Status

The lifecycle status of this element.

Operating System

The following table lists information fields that can be displayed in the Operating System group for a SNMP managed device object.

Field name

Details

Discovered OS Class

The discovered OS class for the SNMP managed device (for example, Embedded).

Discovered OS Type

The discovered OS type for the SNMP managed device (for example, APC).

Discovered OS Version

The discovered OS version for the SNMP managed device (for example, 3.8.6).

Discovered OS Vendor

The vendor of the discovered OS (for example, APC).

Infrastructure

The following table lists information fields that can be displayed in the Infrastructure group for a SNMP managed device object.

Field name

Details

Network Interfaces

Provides the following details for each network interface:

Name—The name of the network interface, also a link to the page for that network interface.

  • Description—Description of the network interface.
  • MAC Address—The MAC address of the network interface, which is also a link to the page for that network interface.
  • Details—The interface number (eth0, eth1), which is also a link to the page for that network interface. A red x icon is displayed where an interface has some mismatch (speed, duplex, or negotiation) with the network device that it is connected to.
  • Connected To—The network device that the network interface is connected to. A red x icon is displayed where the network device port has some mismatch (speed, duplex, or negotiation) with the interface connected to it.
  • Show details—Click Show Details to reveal more information about the network interfaces. Where a mismatch has been flagged in the Connected To or Details fields, the reason for this is highlighted.
  • Show All nnn—Click Show All nnn to show all of the available networking interfaces.

IPv4 Addresses

The name, IPv4 address, and subnet of the SNMP managed device. Click Show Details to see Netmask and Broadcast information.

IPv6 Addresses

The name, IPv6 address, and subnet of the SNMP managed device. Click Show Details to see Prefix information.

Inference

The following table lists information fields that can be displayed in the Inference group for an SNMP managed device object.

Field name

Details

Discovery Access

Lists Discovery Accesses for the SNMP managed device, grouped by scan date. When an endpoint is scanned, a Discovery Access node is created. The Discovery Access node records information such as the start time, end time, Discovery Run that the scan is part of, and previous Discovery Access to simplify troubleshooting. Clicking a Discovery Access displays the DiscoveryAccess-page for that Discovery Access. Where a Discovery Access is about to be deleted as part of DDD aging, a trash can icon is displayed next to the Discovery Access.
