You can use application models to leverage the problem-isolation capabilities of BMC TrueSight Operations Management. With application models, you can perform the following activities:

  • View the overall status summary of an application and focus on a specific area to find the root cause of any issue.
  • View the top-level application node to understand the overall health of end-user transactions and synthetic transactions.
  • View each node associated with the application to analyze the status of that node.

This topic presents the following sections:

Before you begin

The availability of some features depends on the data providers in your environment, for example:

To perform this procedure, you must have Application Operator-level access, or higher.

To view an application model

  1. In the TrueSight console, click Monitoring > Applications.
  2. Click the application whose model you want to view.
  3. In the Application Monitoring page, click the Model tab.

The application model is displayed showing the current status of that application. The top-level node in the application model represents the application. Each node associated with the top-level application node represents a device or a group that is a part of the application. The color of each node determines the severity status of that node. The severity status is used to calculate the overall status of the application. For example, even if one node in the application is in critical, the entire application is considered in critical state. The following figure is an example of an automatic application model:

Example of an application model

To change the orientation of an application model

Depending on the hierarchy in which you want to view the model, click the  icon and select from one of the following choices:

  • Top to Bottom
  • Bottom to Top
  • Left to Right
  • Right to Left

To highlight only impacted nodes

Click Spotlight ON to highlight only the impacted nodes. The rest of the nodes in the application model are dimmed. To view all the nodes in the same brightness, click Spotlight OFF.

To view the events and devices associated with each node

If you have Infrastructure Management, you can view the events and devices associated with each node.

  1. Click a node to view all the events and devices associated with the node.
The Events tab that displays the event details is displayed by default. This information is propagated from the Monitoring > Events page. For more information about monitored events and the actions you can take, see Performing event operations.

    Note

The Events tab for the top-level application node lists only the events directly associated with the application and not with any device or group. For example, an event generated due to an application performance or reliability issue from the synthetic transaction monitoring qualifies as an event which is directly associated with the application. Application level events are generated by synthetic transaction monitoring, and TrueSight IT Data Analytics notifications.

  1. Select a node, and from the action menu next to the node name in the details pane, select Launch BMC TrueSight IT Data Analytics.

    Note

The cross-launch to BMC TrueSight IT Data Analytics applies only to the child nodes and not to the top-level application node.

  2. From the action menu next to an event, select Launch BMC TrueSight IT Data Analytics.
