Performing the BMC Service Level Management Collector upgrade

Note

Starting with the version 9.1.04, BMC will no longer provide support for the SLM Collector and all BMC provided integrations making use of the SLM Collector.

After you perform the BMC Service Level Management upgrade, upgrade the BMC Service Level Management Collector.

The Collector is an optional component and can be omitted if you do not need to create performance or service targets based on BMC Service Impact Management (BMC SIM) CIs. For details about service targets based on BMC SIM CIs, see Configuring BMC SIM in the BMC Service Level Management documentation.

Before you begin

The Collector requires a supported application server or servlet engines, for example, Apache Tomcat. The application server or servlet engine implements the Java servlets and allows for the execution of a Java web server environment.

Ensure you are running a compatible version of Java, as indicated in the Compatibility matrix.

If you have not done so already, prepare the system to run the installers. If you want to run in nonadmin mode on Windows, see Preparing-a-Windows-environment. If you want to run in nonroot mode on UNIX, see Preparing-a-UNIX-environment.

To install BMC Service Level Management Collector

  1. If you have not already done so, download the BMC Service Level Management installer from EPD, or navigate to the installation directory on the CD.
  2. Unzip the installer and navigate to the Disk 1 folder.
  3. Run the installer:
    • (Windows) Run setup.cmd.

The default locations are as follows:

  9. In the features panel, clear all the other features and select only Service Level Management Collector.
  10. Click Next.

    1. Select the application server you installed.
    2. Browse to the web application root (for example, C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Tomcat6.0\webapps).
    3. Enter the port number (for example, 8080).
    4. Browse to the JRE directory.
    5. Click Next.
  12. In the BMC Collector Service Selection panel, select to install as a service (default) or not, and then click Next.
If you do not install Collector as a service, you must manually start it every time you restart the server.
After you have entered the required information, the installer validates your inputs, and then the Installation Preview panel appears, listing the product and product features that will be installed.
  13. Click Install.
The installer installs the BMC Service Level Management features you have selected. After post-installation cleanup, a summary of the installation appears.
  14. Click View Log to review the SEVERE error messages or warnings in the product installer log.
See whether errors are due to network, host, or other environment-related issues. You can view a log file of the installation:
    • (Windows) C:\Users\<installUser>\AppData\Local\Temp\slm_install_log.txt
    • (UNIX) /tmp/slm_install_log.txt
  15. Click Done to exit the BMC Service Level Management installer.
