Licensing overview
This section provides information about the types of licenses, license charges, and obtaining your license key for the AR System server.

To add a AR System server license, you need a license key. | Obtaining license keys in the BMC Helix Innovation Suite Deployment documentation. |
To add any license to an AR System server, you must first add an AR System server license. |
After installing your server and adding its license, you can:
- Use all the AR System features
- Add any other application licenses without obtaining a key
Because servers in a server group use the same database, they share licenses. Each server shares licenses with the other servers in the group. For more information, see Configuring-server-groups and Displaying and tracking server group license usage.
Licensing behavior
This table lists the behavior of licenses:
Component | Behavior |
---|---|
License keys | Only AR System server licenses need keys. Customers can add all non-server licenses without a key. |
Server groups | No license qualifiers are required. |
Dedicated server licenses | Dedicated server licenses are not used. During upgrade, dedicated server licenses are upgraded to full AR System server licenses at no cost. In addition, licenses for any applications associated with the dedicated server are automatically added to your system. |
AR System server, server option, and application licenses | Each instance of an AR System server, server add-on, and an application must be licensed. |
Instance | An instance is defined as an AR System server or group of servers (that is, server group) sharing a common database. In addition, each AR System server must have its own AR System server license key, but the server group feature shares all other BMC product licenses with all of the servers in the group. See Adding-or-removing-licenses for more information. |
User fixed licenses | When you add AR System or application user fixed licenses to a server, you specify the number of such licenses that can be concurrently assigned in the Number of Licenses field (see Adding-or-removing-licenses). This number is the maximum number of licenses available for assignment. This number does not have to be the same as the number of licenses you purchased. The peak number of user fixed licenses assigned to users in each billing period is tracked and used for auditing purposes, whether the assigned users ever log in. Fixed user licenses are considered site licenses, where a site is defined as all of the AR System servers licensed under a single Support ID. Fixed user licenses are assigned to a named user who is entitled to use the same fixed user license anywhere within the site. If the fixed user license is entitled only as a development fixed user license, it may be used only on development servers. |
User floating licenses | When you add AR System or application user floating licenses to a server, you specify the number of such licenses that can be concurrently used in the Number of Licenses field. This number is the maximum number of licenses available for use. This number does not have to be the same as the number of licenses you purchased. The peak number of user floating licenses in use at the same time during each billing period is tracked and used for billing purposes. |
User license limits
If you want to increase the number of user licenses available on your server, you can purchase additional licenses. For this, contact your Remedy product sales representative or an authorized reseller.
To remain in compliance with your purchased licenses, set the appropriate use limits in the Number of Licenses field for each license so that the number corresponds to the number of licenses that you have purchased. If, during an audit, BMC finds that you set the use limits higher (for example, for handling an emergency) and the license usage exceeded your purchased license count, you will be billed for the additional use.
License types overview
To use AR System fully, you need several types of licenses in addition to an AR System server license.
To configure license limits, assign licenses to users, and control and report license consumption in alignment with how user licenses were purchased, BMC provides support for bundled licenses. As a system administrator, you can assign bundled licenses to the users, which are used to access the AR System server and the applications. BMC has used different pricing models to sell Remedy over time, and each of those models used different SKU names. For example, the term “2015 Pricing Model” refers to the first year when a specific pricing model was introduced. To find out what pricing model is relevant to you, identify the names of the licenses or subscriptions that you have bought from BMC, and compare them to the names in the pricing model folders. All of the licenses or subscriptions that you have bought must be from the same model.
Type of license | Description |
---|---|
AR System User | The following license types are used to access the AR System server:
The following types of licenses provide users write access to an AR System server:
For more information, see License-types-for-users-to-access-AR-System-server. |
Server options | Optional server components, such as Distributed Server Option, require separate licenses. |
Application | To be run on an AR System server, most applications must be licensed on the server. |
Application user | To use applications based on AR System, each user needs the following licenses:
|
A AR System server with no server license enables you to assign these licenses:
- Three fixed user licenses (Some pricing models do not include three free fixed AR System user licenses.)
- Unlimited user read licenses
- Unlimited user restricted read licenses
Even though the system allows you to assign three fixed AR System user licenses, make sure that you have purchased the required number of user licenses for the users in your system.
The AR System server does not allow you to assign an Application user fixed license to a user who has an AR User floating license.
The AR System server does not allow you to assign any Application User fixed or floating license to a user who has an AR User read license.
The Remedy licensing grants the legal use of AR System and is necessary for performing unlimited operations that change the database (for example, updating requests).
