Maintaining BMC Helix CMDB data quality by using Data Monitor

Maintaining accurate and consistent configuration item (CI) data is essential for effective service management. CMDB Data Monitor, a capability of CMDB Governor, helps organizations maintain accurate and consistent CI data. It continuously evaluates CI records and identifies incomplete, inconsistent, or incorrect information.

By using Data Monitor, you can define monitoring rules that validate CI attributes, relationships, and asset attributes. These rules run on a schedule and identify configuration items that require attention, helping administrators detect and correct data quality issues across BMC Helix CMDB. After identifying the affected CIs, you can analyze the results using the insights generated by the HelixGPT CMDB Data Quality Agent. These insights help you understand the issue, identify possible root causes, and determine the appropriate corrective actions. You can update the data manually or enable automated updates to apply the recommended fixes based on the confidence criteria.

With Data Monitor, you can perform the following actions:

  • Detect missing or inconsistent CI attributes
  • Validate CIs with cardinality of related CIs
  • Identify duplicates based on the reconciliation job identification activity
  • Analyze monitoring results by using the insights generated by AI‑assisted HelixGPT CMDB Data Quality Agent
  • Automatically apply high-confidence recommended values to correct the CI data

Information

Scenario
At Apex Global, Garth, an asset manager, wants to maintain accurate configuration item (CI) data in the CMDB.

Garth creates Data Monitor rules to evaluate server configuration items and identify records that contain missing attributes such as owner, environment, or location. Garth also creates a relationship-based rule to verify that application configuration items are correctly linked to the servers that host them.

When the rules run, Data Monitor identifies configuration items with missing attributes or incorrect relationships. Garth reviews the results and opens the insights generated by the CMDB Data Quality Agent to understand the issue. Insights highlights a summary of the issue, possible root causes, and suggests recommended values to correct the data.

Garth applies the recommended updates manually and also enables the Automate data fix to have Data Monitor automatically apply high-confidence updates during future rule executions.
