Upgrading PATROL Agents using the TrueSight console

As an administrator, you can upgrade PATROL Agents to the latest version using the same functionality used for Deploying-packages-to-PATROL-Agents-using-the-TrueSight-console. The installation runs silently with the information entered during the package creation.

When upgrading PATROL Agents using the Deploy and Install option in the TrueSight console, the following configuration variables entered during the Deployable package creation are ignored:

  • Cell Configurations
  • INTEGRATIONSERVICES
  • PATROL Default Account properties
  • PATROL Agent Port
  • Central Monitoring Administration Tag(s)
  • RTSERVERS
  • Security Level Variables

Before you begin

Review carefully PATROL-Agent-upgrade-considerations before upgrading the PATROL Agent.

Requirements for upgrading PATROL Agent

Upgrading PATROL Agents uses the Deploy and Install option and requires a Deployable Package that contains the newer PATROL Agent version installation package. For more information, see Creating-deployable-packages.

During the PATROL Agent upgrade, the following validations are performed:

  • The current PATROL Agent version must be 10.0 or later.
  • The Integration Service version must be 10.5 or later.
  • The packages must match the operating system of the target PATROL Agent.
  • The Integration Service and PATROL Agent host must have sufficient disk space for deployment and installation.
    • The \pw\pronto\data\KMDEPLOYMENT directory for the Integration Service must have free disk space of at least the deployable package size.
    • The PATROL Agent installation directory must have free disk space of at least four times the deployable package size.
  • The PATROL components such as PATROL Classic Console, PATROL Central Operator, and wpconfig must be closed if the PATROL components and the PATROL Agent are running on the same computer.

Notes

Use the correct root user password to ensure a successful upgrade.

Important: If you are using the Infrastructure Management-PATROL Repository version 10.7.00, ensure to apply Fix Pack 1 that corrects an issue with upgrading PATROL Agents through predefined packages. For more information, see 10.7.00.001: Fix Pack 1

Deploying Monitoring Solutions

You can deploy monitoring solutions with the PATROL Agent upgrade.

Consider the following scenarios:

  • Scenario 1 - A more recent version of the PATROL Agent is available in the package. The deployment is successful, and the installed version is upgraded.
  • Scenario 2 - The same or earlier version of the PATROL Agent is available in the package. The deployment is unsuccessful.
  • Scenario 3 - A more recent version of the PATROL Agent and monitoring solution is available in the package. The deployment is successful, and the PATROL Agent and monitoring solution are upgraded.

To upgrade PATROL Agents

  1. In the navigation pane of the TrueSight console, expand Configuration and select Managed Devices.
  2. Expand the entries list to display the PATROL Agents that you want to upgrade.
  3. From the action menu for the PATROL Agent, select Deploy and Install Packages.
  4. Select the package that includes the PATROL Agent to be upgraded and select Deploy and Install.

    Note

    PA_deploy_scenarios.png

Deployment Packages that contain a PATROL Agent installer are indicated by an asterisk in the Name column. When upgrading PATROL Agents using the Deploy and Install option in the TrueSight console, the following configuration variables entered during the Deployable package creation are ignored: Cell Configurations, INTEGRATIONSERVICES, PATROL Default Account properties, PATROL Agent Port, Central Monitoring Administration Tag(s), RTSERVERS, and Security Level Variables.

  5. If any agent upgrade validation fails, an error message is displayed and upgrade stops.

    Note

During an upgrade, if an Integration Service is disconnected, the deployment continues when the Integration Service is reconnected.

  6. View the status in the Deploy Status column. For more information, see Viewing-the-deployment-and-installation-summary.

To view the deployment and installation status

The icons in the Deploy Status column indicate the deployment and installation status. See the following table for a description of the icons and the status.

Note

The status of only the latest action (deployment or installation) is displayed in the Deploy Status column.

Conditions for a successful rollback of a failed upgrade to an earlier version

Upgrading the PATROL Agent using the TrueSight console also supports the automatic rollback of an unsuccessful upgrade operation. If your upgrade fails during the process, the  deployer installer automatically rolls back the PATROL Agent to the running state that it was in before the starting the upgrade.

To ensure a successful rollback, make sure that the following prerequisites are met before starting the upgrade:

  • Sufficient space is reserved in the (Windows) %PATROL_HOME%/temp directory or (Unix) /tmp directory.
  • The repository version is 10.7.
  • Valid root privileges are used for Unix PATROL Agents while creating a deployable package.
  • PATROL components such as PATROL Classic Console, PATROL Central Operator, and wpconfig are closed.
