Introduction to application monitoring
The BMC TrueSight App Visibility Manager product is an application performance management tool. No matter where your applications are hosted, IT Operations can see real-time, end-to-end visibility, from the start of the end-user's transaction in the browser to a single line of code. App Visibility Manager enables application monitoring to proactively detect and isolate application performance issues from the end-user perspective, before they negatively impact business reputation and revenue.
The BMC TrueSight Synthetic Monitor with Borland Silk Performer product monitors the performance and reliability of worldwide applications through synthetic (also called robotic) transactions. Define and schedule synthetic monitoring, and measure site health based on metrics such as availability and performance.
The BMC Real End User Experience Monitoring Software Edition product provides end-user-centric performance monitoring that helps IT ensure the quality and availability of web-based applications, determine whether applications meet service-level objectives, and proactively find and fix problems. The product uses packet capture analysis to passively watch actual transactions from real users as they interact with a web application across physical and cloud environments, the internet, corporate networks, and content delivery networks (CDNs).
The following topics describe the major components of this product. For further information, see Key-concepts.
App Visibility Manager
IT Operations and specialists use application monitoring to observe the performance and health of active applications, to perform diagnostics, and to trace application transactions. Specialists responsible for understanding how applications will behave before introducing changes in production might generate synthetic transactions to predict application performance and health.
App Visibility Manager includes the following features:
- Deep application performance visibility
- Proactive problem solving with application diagnostics
- Transaction tracing
- Integrated monitoring on-premises or off
Synthetic Monitor
Use TrueSight Synthetic Monitor to measure application health and user experience. TrueSight Synthetic Monitor enables you to manage the performance and reliability of your applications by executing complex business transactions and monitoring performance and functional behavior. TrueSight Synthetic Monitor enables your business to proactively check service level agreements (SLAs) and receive notification of a breach before the end user is impacted.
You can monitor the client-side business transactions of enterprise applications that are based on technologies such as the following:
- Web (HTML)
- Client-server databases
- Java EE applications
- .NET Framework applications
- Web services
- ERP and CRM applications
Real End User Experience Monitoring Software Edition
As user expectations rise and front- and back-end application architecture becomes more complex, it is more important than ever to understand how your customers and users experience your application.
Real End User Experience Monitoring Software Edition uses passive end-user experience management to capture network traffic, and perform analytics on application performance. This capability is key for troubleshooting problems as they occur. Using actual inbound web traffic, passive end-user experience management examines applications as users interact with them, and allows IT Operations to associate the actions users have taken with the behavior of the application.
With passive end-user experience management implemented, IT Operations can perform the following functions:
- Monitor the end-user user experience and prioritize issues based on end-user impact
- Monitor traffic, availability, and performance of web applications
- Monitoring-application-performance-and-availability-with-Analyzer-dashlets
- Generate reports to ensure that service level agreements (SLAs) are being met
- Run historical queries based on exported data
BMC Real End User Experience Monitoring Software Edition can be installed on a server in your local network or on a cloud-hosted server.

Getting started with application monitoring
The TrueSight Presentation Server integrates with other BMC products to enable tools that help IT Operations monitor and manage the infrastructure or aid in troubleshooting and remediation of outages. The browser interface of the Presentation Server, the TrueSight console, provides the features that enable the product's core use cases and enable users to perform tasks with the product.
