Deployment architecture
The following image shows the deployment architecture of the BMC PATROL for VMware vSphere Knowledge Module (KM):

The following procedure explains the deployment of the BMC PATROL for VMware vSphere KM to monitor a VMware vCenter Server:
- On the recommended hardware, install the latest version of the PATROL Agent and the latest version of BMC PATROL for VMware vSphere. For more information about the recommended hardware, see System requirements.
- Identify the total number for PATROL Agents required to monitor the VMware vCenter Server without exceeding capacity limits. For more information about the recommendations to determine the number of BMC PATROL Agents that are required to monitor a large VMware vCenter Server, see Determining the number of PATROL Agents required to monitor VMware vCenter Server.
- Tune and configure the PATROL Agent with the required pconfig variables. For more information, see Tuning and configuration.
- Configure the PATROL for VMware vSphere KM to monitor the VMware vCenter server. For more information, see Configuring VMware vSphere.
Important: If multiple BMC PATROL Agents are required to monitor the VMware vCenter server, configure Object Filtering on each Agent. For more information, see Object Filtering Details. - The BMC Helix Operations Management user interface verifies if the PATROL Agent collects data by performing the following steps:
- Generate the PATROL SID report.
- Verify the number of instances discovered by the PATROL Agent and confirm if the number is within the scalability guidelines.
The approximate time for a large VMware vCenter server to complete the full discovery of the vCenter inventory, including discovering all hosts, clusters, datastores, and 2500 virtual machines, is approximately 1 hour.
