9.6.00 enhancements

This topic provides information about the enhancements and features introduced in version 9.6.00 of BMC PATROL Agent and provides instructions for downloading the installation files.

Platform support

BMC PATROL Agent is now supported on the following operating systems:

Fully Qualified Domain Name for all operating systems

In this version, BMC PATROL Agent gets the Fully Qualified Domain Name in the following sequence:

• PATROL Agent tries to get the FQDN based upon the domain name set in the /AgentSetup/hostDomainName configuration variable.
• If the configuration variable does not have a value, PATROL Agent gets the value from the BMC_PATROL_HOST_DOMAIN_NAME environment variable.
• If the environment variable is not set then Patrol Agent sends the FQDN returned by System API. In a UNIX environment, this environment variable is set by the patrolrc.sh script.

Support for Secure Hash Algorithm 512 (SHA-512) on HP-UX 64-bit Itanium

On HP-UX 64-bit Itanium computers, BMC PATROL Agent now supports the SHA-512 algorithm.

Ability to download and install Java SE Runtime Environment package separately

In earlier versions, JRE was bundled with BMC PATROL Agent installation files. From version 9.6 of BMC PATROL Agent onwards, you can download and install JRE separately. BMC PATROL Agent is not bundled with JRE in this version of BMC PATROL Agent. The supported version of JRE in BMC PATROL Agent 9.6 is JRE version 1.7. Downloading the installation utility and the product files

This section provides instructions for downloading BMC PATROL Agent 9.6 from the BMC Electronic Product Distribution (EPD) website.

This section provides the information that you need to download and install the patch from the BMC Electronic Product Distribution (EPD) website. To download the patch and installation utility from the EPD website, perform the following steps:

1. Create a directory in which to place the downloaded files.
   
   

   Note

   On Windows computers, ensure that the directory is only one level into the directory structure. The EPD package creates a directory in the temporary directory when you extract the files, and the directory that contains the installation image should not be in a directory deeper than two levels into the directory structure.

2. Go to http://www.bmc.com/available/epd.html.
3. At the logon prompt, enter your user ID and password, and click Submit.
4. On the Export Compliance and Access Terms page, provide the required information, agree to the terms of the agreements, and click Continue.
5. If you are accessing this site for the first time, create an EPD profile to specify the languages and platforms that you want to see, per the EPD site help; otherwise, skip to step 6.
6. Verify that the correct profile is displayed for your download purpose.

7. You can download the installation utility and the product patch using either of the following methods:

   • Using Component View

   • Using License Products View

   Using Component View

   1. In the Filter Products field, type BMC PATROL Installation Utility.
   2. Click Go.
   3. In the right pane, click BMC PATROL Installation Utility.
   4. In the Version list, select 9.6.00, and click Go.

   5. In the Products tab, based on the operating system, select the check box next to the files.

   6. To download the selected files, click Download (FTP) or Download Manager:
      • Download (FTP) places the selected items in an FTP directory, and the credentials and FTP instructions are sent to you in an email message.
      • Download Manager enables you to download multiple files consecutively and to resume an interrupted download.
        This method requires a one-time installation of the Akamai NetSession client program on the target computer and is usually the faster and more reliable way to transfer files. A checksum operation is used to verify file integrity automatically.
   7. Click <<Back to Product List.
   8. In the Filter Products: field, type BMC PATROL Agent.
   9. Click Go.
   10. In the right pane, click BMC PATROL Agent.
   11. In the Version: list, select 9.6.00, and click Go.

   12. In the Product tab, based on the operating system, select the check box next to the files.

   13. To download the selected files, click Download (FTP) or Download Manager:

         This method requires a one-time installation of the Akamai NetSession client program on the target computer and is usually the faster and more reliable way to transfer files. A checksum operation is used to verify file integrity automatically.
   14. Complete the installation procedure described in the Installing the patch section.

   Using Licensed Products View

   1. Click Go To Licensed Products View.
   2. Locate BMC ProactiveNet and expand its entries to show the available version numbers.
   3. Expand BMC ProactiveNet Performance Management Suite 9.6.00 to show the available components.

   4. Locate and expand BMC PATROL Installation Utility 9.6.00 to show the available files.
      
      

      Note

       You can use BMC PATROL Installation Utility 9.6.00 or later.

   5. Select the check box next to the files, based on the appropriate platforms.

Downloading the JRE file

This section provides instructions for downloading JRE file from the EPD website.

1. Create a directory in which to place the downloaded files.
