Defining a service

When defining a service, add the dynamic and static content to the service. Either the dynamic or static content is essential for defining a valid service. You can also define both for the same service.

For example, you can add the Blueprint Host to Storage System blueprint as dynamic content to the Storage service and configuration items (CIs) as the static content to the Network service.

To add dynamic content to a service

You can add dynamic content to a service while either creating it or editing it.

  1. Click Services and then click Create New Service.
  2. In the Define Service pane, specify the service name, for example, Storage.
  3. (Optional) Assign a kind to the Storage service.
By default, a service is created as a business service. For more information about service kinds, see Business services, technical services, and business applications.
  4. (Optional) Select service criticality from the list to mark the importance of the business service.
By default, no default criticality is assigned to a service.
  5. Click Add Dynamic content.
  6. Select a blueprint, for example, Blueprint Host to Storage System, from the list.
For information about blueprints, see Understanding-service-blueprints.
  7. Select one or more namespaces, key for namespaces, host, or values for any other CI attributes that you have defined as variables when defining the blueprint.

    Tip

Select Use regEx and enter a regular expression to search and select multiple configurations simultaneously. For more information about using regular expressions to search, see Logical and arithmetic expressions..

Ensure that you place the global inline flags such as ignorecase (?i) in the beginning of the expression. For example, use (?i)^aus to search and populate the service with the CIs whose names start with aus (case-insensitive). If you place the flag in the middle of the expression, no CIs will be populated for the service.

  8. (Optional) Preview the dynamic content.
  9. Click Save.
The added blueprint appears in the Dynamic Composition section of the Define Service pane.
  10. Click Save and Close.
The Storage service shows the count of blueprints that you added as part of the dynamic content.

Can I use the same blueprint multiple times?
  • You can use a blueprint more than once in a service hierarchy. However, you can use a particular blueprint only once in a single service.
  • You can use a combination of blueprints in a single service.

To add static content to a service

  1. Click Services and then click Create New Service.
  2. In the Define Service pane, specify the service name, for example, Network.
  3. (Optional) Assign a kind to the Network service.
By default, a service is created as a business service. For more information about service kinds, see Business services, technical services, and business applications
  4. (Optional) Select service criticality from the list to mark the importance of the business service.
By default, no default criticality is assigned to a service.
  5. Click Add Static content.
  6. Click Add CIs to Service to add CIs from the list.
  7. Select one or more CIs to add the CIs to the service.
When you select only one CI, by default, the Include Related CIs check box is selected, which indicates that all the related CIs of the selected CI will also be added. If you don't want to add related CIs, clear the check box.

    Important

You can add multiple CIs at the same time. However, you cannot add multiple CIs with their related CIs at the same time.

For example, add a Windows host as the CI to the Network service.

  8. Click Close to view the static CIs added as part of static content.
  9. (Optional) Change the display to Organic or Hierarchic view.
In the organic view, nodes are placed close to their adjacent nodes, thus saving space. While, in the hierarchic view, the nodes are distributed into layers, which facilitate the identification of dependencies and relationships among the nodes.
  10. Click Save and Close.
The Define Service pane shows the static CIs added in the Static Composition section.
  11. (Optional) In the Define Service pane, click View Content at the bottom of the pane and view all content or only direct connections.
  12. Click Save and Close.
The Network service shows the count of CIs that you added as part of the static content.
