Upgrading

This section describes the upgrade and migration options available from previous versions of BMC Discovery. BMC Discovery24.3 (14.1) is supported on Oracle Linux 9.

Back up before upgrading

The upgrade to BMC Discovery 24.3 is fully tested and supported, and from previous releases running on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 or CentOS 7 is more significant than previous upgrades. The upgrade is complex, and involves a change of two major versions: from Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 or CentOS 7 to Oracle Linux 9. During the upgrade, the BMC Discovery product is uninstalled and then reinstalled, if for any reason, the upgrade fails at that time, the BMC Discovery product cannot resolve any upgrade issues.

Before you upgrade, you should back up the appliance, or for clusters, each cluster member. Use the SSH or Windows Share backup method.

If you are using a virtual appliance, you should shutdown and take a snapshot of the virtual machine. For a cluster of virtual appliances, you should shutdown all the virtual machines at the same time and snapshot them at the same time. For example, if you are using VMware, use the vSphere Client to shutdown the virtual machines and take the snapshot.

Upgrade and migration overview

To summarize the upgrade paths and outcomes:

  • You can upgrade to BMC Discovery24.3 (14.1) running on Oracle Linux 9 from BMC Discovery 23.3  and later running on Oracle Linux 9.
  • You can also upgrade to BMC Discovery24.3 (14.1) running on Oracle Linux 9 from BMC Discovery running on CentOS 7 or Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7.
  • You can also migrate to BMC Discovery24.3 (14.1). Migration involves backing up the old appliance and restoring to a new appliance running on Oracle Linux 9.

This diagram show the upgrade paths available.

Before you upgrade, we recommend that you back up the appliance, or for clusters, each appliance. If you are using a virtual appliance or a cluster of virtual appliances, you should shut down the virtual appliance, take a snapshot, and restart.

Note

When upgrading to BMC Discovery 24.3 (14.1), we strongly recommend that you upgrade by using your existing architecture and testing  version 24.3 (14.1) in a known configuration.
