Entity data from Helix shared datastore

Deriving the best performance from your managed compute systems requires having continuous visibility of its configuration and performance metrics. These managed compute systems include physical systems and systems that run on virtualized platforms such as AIX, HP, KVM, and Solaris.

Two approaches to data collection

Running ETLs has been a classical approach to collecting metrics data from monitored systems. However, you have the option to leverage out-of-the-box integration with BMC Helix Operations Management and access the same metrics data from the hierarchy pane within BMC Helix Continuous Optimization. BMC Helix Operations Management periodically collects this data from your managed compute systems and stores the collected data in a datastore residing within BMC Discovery. BMC Helix Continuous Optimization is capable of accessing this datastore and presenting metrics from your managed compute systems just like an ETL would present.

These two approaches to collecting configuration and performance metrics data are illustrated in this picture.

Out-of-the-box and automatic cataloging and extraction

BMC Helix Operations Management runs extraction under-the-hood and stores configuration and performance metrics from managed compute systems in BMC Discovery. This extraction of metrics by BMC Helix Operations Management happens every minute and is aggregated every 15 minutes and stored in BMC Discovery. This extraction and aggregation happen independent of your actions on BMC Helix Continuous Optimization.

This screenshot illustrates the entity tree pulled and organized by BMC Helix Continuous Optimizationafter extracting data from BMC Helix Operations Management. The cloud logo next to BMC - Helix Operations Management Extractor expands to display the entities, relationships and metrics automatically populated by this integration of BMC Helix Operations Management and BMC Helix Continuous Optimization.
