Analyzing your infrastructure data by using capacity views


As a capacity planner, you need timely and accurate visibility into system usage to guarantee optimal performance and maximize system uptime. To accomplish this, use capacity views in BMC Helix Continuous Optimization to review and analyze the usage and performance of your infrastructure elements and services. With views, you can gain visibility into the capacity of the IT infrastructure in a physical, virtual, cloud, container, databases, storage, networks, and virtually any domain. 

Use capacity views to achieve the goals, such as:

  • Track the capacity of each entity in your environment.
  • Drill down into a specific instance and track the capacity of it.
  • Identify bottlenecks and track resources that are, or will soon be, experiencing capacity shortfalls.
  • Discover underutilized and overutilized resources.
  • Resolve issues that are identified for your environment by providing a set of recommended actions.

Capacity views for some technologies and environments are available out of the box. Additionally, the administrator can define customized views that are tailored to different organizational roles or to specific services and applications.

Views are populated after the relevant ETL modules are run followed by the materializer task run.

Scenario

Teresa is a vSphere Technology Specialist in an IT organization. She manages and monitors the vSphere infrastructure to ensure that there are sufficient resources (CPU, memory, and storage) to meet the current and future capacity requirements.

Teresa wants to know whether any of the resources are at risk of saturation. She would like to get the following information:

  • Identify the infrastructure elements that have at least one resource that is saturated or is nearing saturation.
  • Know the remedial action to be taken.

Alan, an administrator, installs the vSphere views and provides the required permissions to Teresa to access the view. With vSphere views, Teresa can quickly get the information that she wants. The Recommendations page in the vSphere Infrastructure view provides a list of the infrastructure elements that have saturated or are nearing saturation. For every element, the page provides recommended actions that can be taken to resolve any saturation issues that can occur in the future.
