Creating and viewing entities

Create various entities such as a system, system template, business driver, service template, and so on in the Workspace tab.

Systems and business drivers are either created automatically by ETLs used to import data into BMC Helix Continuous Optimization or manually by authorized users.

Adding a system or business driver to a domain either manually or by running an ETL is a way to create a parent-child relationship between the domain and the added entity. To understand the effect of creating and breaking relationships manually versus automatically, see Hierarchies.

You can create and add new entities to domains or import existing entities.

To add an entity to a domain

  1. Select Workspace > Domains, Services & Applications > domainName.
  2. Select Add > Add system, and click Next.
  3. To create a new entity, perform these steps:
    1. Select Create a new system, and click Next.
    2. Specify a name, type, and optional description for the entity, and click Next.
    3. On the Summary page, click Finish.
  4. To import an existing entity, perform these steps:
    1. Select Import existing system, and click Next.
    2. Select the system you want to add.
Under Source, all the systems are listed under categories, such as All Domains, Newly discovered, Unassigned and Shared Systems. You can expand a category and select a system.

      Tip

Use Search log search.pngto add a system or business driver. Type the name of the system (or business driver) in the Search field to locate the entity.

To search for a system (or business driver) that you want to add, use wildcards. For example, if you type *vm*, the search lists all systems with 'vm' in their names. Then select the system (or business driver) to add. The number of search results is displayed at the bottom of the Search box.

You can also restrict results of the search for a system (or business driver) based on its status. For example:

      • status:newly - restricts results to Newly discovered systems (or business drivers)
      • status:unassigned - restricts results to Unassigned systems (or business drivers)
      • status:shared - restricts results to Shared systems
      • status:common - restricts results to Common business drivers

For more information on the various Search fields available, see Search syntax.

    3. On the Summary page, click Finish.
The system is added to the domain.

Important

The newly-created entity will not collect any data until you associate it with one of the systems or business drivers that are detected and automatically configured by an ETL task. You must perform a manual association.

To create a derived entity

Create a derived entity that is based on the existing entities. The capacity of the derived entity is calculated based on the values of capacity-specific parameters of these exiting entities.

  1. Select Workspace > Domains, Services & Applications > domainName.
  2. Select Add > Add system, and click Next.
  3. Select Derive a new system from existing resources, and click Next.
  4. Select one or more entities from which you want to derive the entity, and click Next.
  5. Select one of the following metrics to include in the derived entity:
    1. All global metrics: Includes all the metrics for which the resource type is global.
    2. All metrics: Includes all types of metrics.
    3. Select metrics: Select a specific metric from the list.
  6. Select the aggregation type to be used for calculating the capacity of the derived entity, and click Next.

    Derivation types

The derivation type is the aggregation function applied to the selected metrics to derive new metrics. The following derivation types are available:

    • Implicit calculation
    • Sum
    • Average
    • Min
    • Max

Implicit calculation is the default type that is metric dependent. In this type, some metrics are averaged (for example, CPU utilization) and different aggregation functions are applied to other metrics (for example, the minimum value of disk free space is computed).

    • Cluster A/A: If you were using this type in TrueSight Capacity Optimization, use Average in BMC Helix Continuous Optimization.
    • Cluster A/P: If you were using this type in TrueSight Capacity Optimization, use Max in BMC Helix Continuous Optimization.

  7. In the Start since box, specify a date from which you want to import data, and click Next.
The default is last 7 days.
  8. Specify a name, type, and optional description for the entity, and click Next.
  9. On the Summary page, click Finish.

To edit the configuration of a derived entity

  1. Select Workspace > Domains, Services & Applications > domainName.
  2. In the left pane, select the derived entity to be updated.
  3. Click Edit structure to change the entities, metrics, and the start date of data collection.
  4. Click Recompute series to define a period from which you want to recalculate the metric series.

To add an entity to an existing system or business driver

  1. Select Workspace > Domains, Services & Applications.
  2. Click Systems (or Business drivers) showing under the selected domain in the left navigation pane.
  3. On the detail page, click Add and click Next.
  4. Create a new entity or import an existing entity. For details, see Adding and importing entities in a domain.

To view an entity

  1. Select Workspace > Domains, Services & Applications.
  2. Expand the Systems (or Business drivers) node.
  3. Locate the system (or business driver) in the navigation tree.
  4. Click its name to view the details of metrics that are imported by the entity.

Where to go from here
