Working with capacity pools
Capacity pools are used to group resources such as CPU, memory, and storage based on the business purpose.
Creating a capacity pool
A capacity pool can be created using entities that are selected explicitly or using rules based on tags.
To create a capacity pool using manual entities selection
The following video (2:59) illustrates the process of creating a Capacity Pool using manual entries for viewing in the Views tab:
- Navigate to the Workspace tab and select the domain from the hierarchy.
- Click Add > Add capacity pool.
- Enter a Name and Description for the capacity pool.
- Select the Capacity Pool type.
- Select Manual from the Element selection.
- In the Elements area, select the elements you want to add to the capacity pool from the Available elements table and click >> to add them to the Selected elements table.
- In the Lookup Name field, type the required lookup name.
- Select the time duration for which the Domain-system relation will be valid. The default value is Always.
- Select From Today if you want the domain-system relation to be valid only from today.
- Select Always if you want the domain-system relation to be always valid.
- Select a date from the From date field if you want the domain-system relation to be valid from a set date.
- Click Save.
To create a capacity pool using rule based entities selection
The following video (3:50) illustrates the process of creating a capacity pool based on tags for viewing in the Views tab.
- Navigate to the Workspace tab and select the domain from the hierarchy.
- Click Add > Add capacity pool.
- Enter a Name and Description for the capacity pool.
- Select the Capacity Pool type.
- Select Rule-based from the Entity selection to create the capacity pool using entities based on a rule that uses tags to identify entities.
- Use the Select tags list to select the tags that will be used to match the entities added to the capacity pool
- Select the Rule evaluation mode to select the mode used to evaluate and add entities to the capacity pool.
- Select Manual and acknowledged to only add entities that currently have the selected tag(s).
- Select Automatic to dynamically add entities to the capacity pool based on tag(s) that match.
- Select the time duration for which the domain-system relation will be valid. The default value is Always.
- Select Today if you want the domain-system relation to be valid only from today.
- Select Always if you want the domain-system relation to be always valid.
- Select a date from the From date field if you want the domain-system relation to be valid from a set date.
- Click Save.
Capacity pool fields
The following table describes all the fields available from the Capacity Pool screen.
Field | Description |

Name | Name of the capacity pool |
Description | Brief description of the capacity pool. It is recommended that you include a description based on the entities you are adding to the capacity pool. |
Capacity Pool type | Select the capacity pool type before selecting the entities to add to the capacity pool. The available types are: AIX Power VM Hosts, AIX Shared Processor Pool, Hyper-V Clusters, Hyper-V Hosts, KVM Hosts, OpenStack Host Aggregate, Storage Pools, VMware Clusters, VMware Datastores, and VMware Hosts. |
Entity selection | Select the mode you want to use for selecting entities for adding to the capacity pool. Select Manual to manually select entities or Rule-based to select entities based on rules. |
Element Selection | After you select the capacity pool type, select the elements to add to the capacity pool. This field is available only if you select Manual as the Entity selection. |
Select tags | Select the Tag type, type the name of the Tag, and add it to the list of Selected tags. All entities that match the selected tags are added to the capacity pool. You can use the logical operators, AND or OR to fine tune the selected tags. This field is available only if you select Rule-based as the Entity selection. |
Rule evaluation mode | The Rule evaluation mode allows you to determine if entities are added once or dynamically to the capacity pool. Select Automatic if you want to automatically add new entities that match the tags to the capacity pool. Select Manual and acknowledged to manually acknowledge entities added to the capacity pool. This field is available only if you select Rule-based as the Entity selection. |
Lookup Name | Enter a unique lookup name for the capacity pool. |
Domain - system relation | Select the time duration for which the domain-system relation will be valid. The default value is Always.

Managing capacity pools
After you create a capacity pool, you can perform the following tasks.
