Using labels to categorize your resources
You can add labels to categorize your resources. For example, you might want to label servers according to their purpose or to a project code.
When using labels, remember that:
- You can associate multiple labels to one resource. This enables you to group resources in multiple ways.
- In all of the resource list views, you can add the Labels column to the table. You cannot sort this column.
- You can create filters for labels and use them in searches.
- Labels are not shared among users. You have your own set of labels that you create. However, labels on a shared resource are visible to all of the users who can access the resource.
- Labels are not hierarchical. For example, labeling a service does not automatically label that service's resources.

The following BMC Communities video (3:56) describes how you can use labels to categorize your resource.
To add the Labels column
- On the Resource List page of the MyResources tab, click Select columns above the table, and select the LABELS check box.
- To move the column, select and drag the heading row of the Labels column and move it to the position you want in the table.
- To remove the column, click the Select columns link above the table, and clear the LABELS check box.
Changes you make in the column selection and order remain the same the next time you log in.
To apply a label from the Resource List
- On the Resource List page of the My Resources tab, select one or more resources that you want to label.
Choose Actions > Edit Labels.
Labels that are already assigned to a selected resource are listed with a check mark (). If more than one resource is selected, labels that apply to one or more of the selected resources (but not all) are listed with a dash (
).
Be aware that using the Tab key to navigate between fields in the Edit Labels dialog associates the label prematurely.
- Type a label in the Label as field, and click the Apply label link that appears, or select an existing label from the search list that appears after you type at least two matching characters in the field.
The maximum length of a label is 254 characters. Labels can contain spaces, but they cannot contain commas.
Labels for resources that you share (but did not create) do not appear in the list.
Labels you create for one resource type (for example, a server) also appear in the list of other resource types (for example, a service). - Click OK.
To apply a label from a resources details page
Click Edit Labels under the LABELS heading on the Configuration page for the resource, and edit the labels as described in the previous procedure.
To filter using labels
- To create a filter:
- On the Resource List page of the My Resources tab, hover over a label set and click the down arrow to open the Edit Labels pop-up window.
- Select one or more labels that you want to include in the filter.
- Click one of the following links to add a filter to the FILTER list on the left side of the window:
- Add selected as a filter – Searches for resources that include the selected labels.
- Filter out selected – Searches for resources that do not include the selected labels.
- On the Resource List page of the My Resources tab, hover over a label set and click the down arrow to open the Edit Labels pop-up window.
- Under the FILTER list, select the filters you want to include in your search.
The filters you select are added to the Search field, and the table is automatically updated. You can also add other search criteria to the field. For more information, see Searching-in-the-My-Cloud-Services-console.
To disassociate a label from a resource
- On the Resource List page of the My Resources tab, select one or more resources from which you want to remove the label.
- Choose Actions > Edit Labels.
- Clear the check box of the label you want to disassociate.
You can clear more than one check box if you want to disassociate multiple labels. - Click OK.
