Managing cloud resources

Use the My Cloud Services console to manage one or more of your resources from the Resource List page. You can perform various actions on your resources, for example, stop and start a server, or decommission a storage device. This topic includes:

Using the Resource List page to manage your resources

The Resource List page lets you quickly manage your resources, without drilling down into specific components. The Resource Type section lists the number of servers, services, storage, database, application containers, and custom objects available to you. The My Cloud Services console remembers the resource type that you viewed the last time you were in the Resources List view and returns to that view when you view the Resources List again (even if you log in again). If you refresh your browser cache, the default resource type list will be the Services list.

To manage resources from the Resource List page

  1. Select a resource type, for example, Servers
    • You can use the Search field to locate servers in the list.
    • You can use the Filter list to show or hide servers according to the filter criteria.
To add an item to the Filter list, hover the pointer near the value in the table and click the arrow when it appears. Then, click Add "Name" as a filter or Filter Out "Name" for that item.

  2. To perform an action on your resource, hover over the name under the Name column, and click the arrow next to the item to display a menu of items.
Alternatively, you can select one or more check boxes next to items in the list, and click the Actions menu. (The Actions menu appears on specific column values depending on the context.)
  3. Select an action from the menu.

As an action cycles through various phases, the Status is updated.

Managing specific resource types

The following sections give a brief overview of how to manage various resource types.

Managing your servers

For details about managing individual servers, see Managing-servers-in-a-service.

Managing your services

You can view detailed information about a service, including its configuration, performance, activities taken on the service, the monitoring rules in effect for the service, and Team management

The Configuration page includes summary information about the service, including the technical owner, who requested the service, the date the service was requested, and cost per month of the service.

From the Configuration page you can manage the individual servers of the service. You can start, shut down, connect to, synchronize, stop, and restart servers. For more information about managing individual servers, see Managing-servers-in-a-service.

To open the Configuration page for a service, click a service name from the list of services in the Resource List page under the My Resources tab. You can then complete the following actions for the service from the Actions links on the left side of the window.

Action you can perform on a service

Description

Decommission Service

When you create cloud services, you specify a date in the future when the service will be decommissioned. However, you can decommission a service before the planned decommission date. If you decommission a database, the database is deleted in BMC Database Automation.

When you decommission a service, BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management takes the following actions, in this order:

  1. Sets the contractline status to Terminated/Expired.
  2. Stops the service offering instance.
  3. Decommissions sensors.
  4. Deletes the policy domain.
  5. Deletes server groups, which includes the following actions for each server group:
    1. Delete logical communication paths.
    2. Delete compute containers, which includes the following actions for each compute container:
      1. Release NICs and IP addresses.
      2. Delete DNS entries.
      3. Release any attached storage.
    3. Delete load balancer pool entries and load balancer pools.
  6. Updates user quotas.

Extend Decommission Date

When you create cloud services, you specify a date in the future when the service will be decommissioned. However, you can extend the life of a service past the planned decommission date.

Start Service

Starts a commissioned service, which involves starting all of the servers in the service.

Stop Service

Stops a service, which involves stopping all of the servers in the service.

Note

  • A service that displays a status of Running might contain one or more stopped servers.
  • For services that use physical servers, the Start ServiceStop Service, and Shutdown Service commands are dummy actions whose tasks are automatically marked as Complete, but no actions occur on the target physical servers.
  • If you stop a running virtual machine (VM) instead of by using the Stop operator action of BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management, refreshing the service instances list does not refresh the status of the stopped VM. Although the VM is stopped, the My Cloud Services console still shows the status of Running. Using the Stop operation action avoids this status inaccuracy.

Shutdown Service

Performs a soft shutdown in which all data is saved before the VMs are powered off.

Synchronize Service

Synchronizes all servers in the service. See Refreshing servers for more information.

Restart Service

Restarts a stopped service

Configure Monitoring

Allows you to enable or disable monitoring or change the monitoring level after a server has been provisioned.

Note: This action is available if your administrator added it as an option for your service.

Alternatively, you can perform actions directly from the Resource List:

  1. Under the Resource Type section, click Services.
The table lists all of your services.
  2. Select the check box next to one or more services.
  3. From the Actions menu, select an action, for example, Extend Decommission Date
  4. Perform the required action, for example, extend the date.

When an operation is in progress on a service, a Pending Action message appears, and all actions for the service are disabled until the operation finishes.

To add a server to a service

Note

If your administrator has not added the Add Server option for the service, you will not see this option and will not be able to perform these steps.

  1. On the Resource List page of the My Resources tab, click Services under RESOURCE TYPE.
  2. Click the service to which you want to add a server.
  3. On the Configuration page for the service, click Add Server.
  4. Select the number of instances you want to add, and enter the user name and password for the servers you want to add.

  5. Click OK.
The Configuration page refreshes to show the modification you want to make.

  6. Click Submit Changes.
  7. In the Submit Changes dialog box, click Yes.

Managing your storage devices

You can view detailed information about a storage device, including its performance and activities taken on that device. To open the storage device's Configuration page, click a name from the Resource List page under My Resources. You can then decommission the storage using the Actions link on the left side of the window.

Alternatively, you can decommission storage directly from the Resource List:

  1. Select the check box next to one or more storage devices from the Resource List page under the My Resources tab.
  2. In the Actions menu, select Decommission Storage.

  • Start Database
  • Stop Database

Alternatively, you can perform actions directly from the Resource List page using the Actions menu.

Managing your custom resources

You can view detailed information about your custom resource. To open the custom Configuration page, click a name from the Resource List page under the My Resources tab. You can then complete the following actions for the custom resource from the Actions links on the left side of the window:

  • Start Custom
  • Stop Custom

Alternatively, you can perform actions directly from the Resource List page using the Actions menu.
