Onboarding compute and storage resources for the Appliance Provider

This topic describes onboarding compute and storage resources and creating compute pools for the Appliance Provider using the BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management console.

Before you begin

Ensure that the datastores are shared across all hosts in a cluster.

To onboard Appliance Provider resources

  1. From the BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management Administration console, click the vertical Workspaces menu on the left side of the window and select Resources.
  2. Under Quick Links on the left, click Resources in the Compute section.
  3. Click the Onboard Resource icon plus_button.gif.
The Onboard Resource dialog box is displayed, as shown in the following figure:
    OnRs.png
  4. Select the pod name; and for Resource Type, select Virtual Cluster, and for Provider Name, select Appliance_Provider, as shown in the following figure:
    Ap_OnRes1.png
  5. From the available resources, select the resource and click Add, as shown in the following figure:
    Ap_OnRes2.png
  6. Click Onboard
This action onboards the selected virtual cluster.

    Warning

    Note

When you onboard a new VMware cluster, some time can elapse before the resource is available in the BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management user interface because the availability depends on the hardware infrastructure.

When you onboard a virtual cluster, you also onboard the virtual hosts and virtual disk repositories (also called datastores) associated with the virtual cluster.

To offboard Appliance Provider resources

  1. From the BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management Administration console, click the vertical Workspaces menu on the left side of the window and select Resources.
  2. Under Quick Links on the left, click Resources in the Compute section.
  3. Select the resource that you want to offboard.
  4. Click the Offboard Resource icon minus_button.gif.
This action removes the resource from the BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management system.

To create a compute pool for Appliance Provider

  1. From the BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management Administration Console, click the vertical Workspaces menu on the left side of the window and select Resources.
  2. Under Quick Links on the left, click Compute Pools in the Compute section.
  3. Click the Create Compute Pool icon plus_button.gif.
The Create Compute Pool dialog box is displayed, as shown in the following figure:
    Ap_cmpPl.png
  4. Create the following types of compute pools:

Click here to create a virtual-cluster-based compute pool
    1. In the Create Compute Pool dialog box, enter values in the Pod, Resource Type, Provider Type, Vendor, and Hardware Architecture fields, shown in the following figure.

      Warning

      Note

To create a virtual-cluster-based compute pool, select Virtual Cluster for Resource Type.

    2. Click Next.
The Create Compute Pool Resources dialog box is displayed, as shown in the following figure:
      CrtCompPool_VC2.png
    3. Select one or more resources and click Add to move them to the Selected Resources table.
You can also drag and drop resources from the Available Resources table to the Selected Resources table.
This action creates a virtual cluster based compute pool, as shown in the following figure.

Click here to create a virtual disk repository pool
    1. In the Create Compute Pool dialog box, enter values in the Pod, Resource Type, Provider Type, and Vendor fields, as shown in the following figure.

      Warning

      Note

To create a virtual disk repository pool, select Virtual Disk Repository for Resource Type.

    2. Click Next.
The Create Compute Pool Resources dialog box is displayed, as shown in the following figure:

    3. Select one or more resources and click Add to move them to the Selected Resources table.
You can also drag and drop resources from the Available Resources table to the Selected Resources table.

This action creates a virtual disk repository pool, as shown in the following table:

To refresh the data

After adding any resources (host and so forth), ensure that you click Refreshrefreshbtn.gif in the upper-right corner of the window to refresh the data in the BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management solution.

In the following scenario, you must refresh the data by using the instructions provided:

Scenarios

Instructions

Adding an ESXi host to an existing virtual cluster

  1. Select the virtual cluster in which a virtual host is added.
  2. Update the virtual hosts associated with the virtual cluster by selecting the virtual cluster and clicking Synchronize Virtual Cluster syncvirtcluster.gif.
  3. Verify the onboarded virtual host.

Migrating an ESXi host from one virtual cluster to another

  1. Offboard the virtual host from the virtual cluster from which it is removed.
  2. Select the virtual cluster for which a virtual host is added.
  3. Update the virtual hosts associated with the virtual cluster by selecting the virtual cluster and clicking Synchronize Virtual Cluster syncvirtcluster.gif.
  4. Verify the onboarded virtual host.

Note: If you cannot offboard the virtual host, it will be visible in both virtual clusters.

Adding a new datastore

  1. Select the virtual cluster for which the datastore is added.
  2. Update the datastore associated with the virtual cluster by selecting the virtual cluster and clicking  Synchronize Virtual Cluster syncvirtcluster.gif.
  3. Verify onboarded datastores.
