VMware environment requirements

This topic describes the minimum requirements for setting up BMC BladeLogic in a VMware environment.

System requirements

To use BMC BladeLogic in a VMware vSphere virtual environment, you must have the following minimum configuration:

  • ESX Host (version 3.0, 3.5, 3i, 4.0, 4i, and 5i)
  • vCenter Server (vSphere versions 2.5, 4,  4.1, and 5.0)

Access and privileges

  • Application Server — The Application Server must have access to the web service on the target (the vCenter server) web service URL:https://<Virtual Center Name:<port>/sdk.
  • Agent — The agent must have administrative privileges. That is, the C:\windows\rsc\exports file should contain an entry such as:
     ‘* rw, user=administrator’
  • vCenter — BMC BladeLogic requires, at a minimum, Read Only permission for all objects in vCenter. BMC BladeLogic must have administrative permissions for any areas to which you want to deploy, or areas that you might want to modify. For example, if you want to deploy new VMs for a specific cluster, then you require:
    • Read only permissions for the entire vCenter
    • Administrative privileges for the cluster (and any additional permissions needed to create VMs on the cluster)
  • vCenter user — The following privileges must be defined for the vCenter user:

    Entity

    Privileges for role

    VMs

    All privileges

    Host/Cluster/Resource pools/Data Center/Folder

Read access to all properties and configuration information for all the entities

Write access to create VMs on the required storage

    Storage

Read access to all properties and configuration information for all the entities

Write access to create VMs on the required storage

    Network

All privileges, for deployment and modifications
