Configuring BMC Remedyforce CMDB 2.0
BMC Remedyforce Configuration Management Database (CMDB) 2.0 enables you to store information about the configuration items (CIs) and assets in your environment. A CI is any component in your IT infrastructure that enables you to deliver a business service to your users (for example, business processes and LAN endpoints). An asset is a corporate resource that you need to manage from a financial and contractual perspective (for example, laptops and mobiles). In some cases, CIs are also assets and vice-versa (for example, computer systems and printers).
The Common Data Model in BMC Remedyforce CMDB unifies the representation of asset and CI data. It is designed to store data about the most common CIs and assets and provide a mechanism for linking them. The data model provides a complete view of all elements of an IT environment and how they affect each other.
This section provides information about configuring BMC Remedyforce CMDB 2.0, which is the enhanced CMDB available starting from BMC Remedyforce version 20.14.01. For new installations of BMC Remedyforce 20.14.01 and later, CMDB 2.0 is available out of the box. If you have upgraded from BMC Remedyforce 20.13.02 or earlier to version 20.14.01 or later, you have to manually upgrade to CMDB 2.0.
BMC recommends that you upgrade to CMDB 2.0 because CMDB 1.0 does not support many features, such as asset management, models, normalization, and locations. However, if you want to continue using CMDB 1.0, see Configuring CMDB 1.0.
The following table describes the recommended process for configuring BMC Remedyforce CMDB 2.0 in your organization:
|1.||Understand how assets and CIs coexist in BMC Remedyforce CMDB and how the Common Data Model stores data about the most common CIs and assets and provides a mechanism for creating relationships between them.|
Determine whether you want to manage assets, CIs, or both in BMC Remedyforce CMDB.
Based on your requirements, you can perform the following actions:
|3.||Enable and set up discovery of devices in your network and import the discovered devices to Remedyforce CMDB.||Discovering CIs and assets|

Enable tracking of attribute history and configure attributes in the
Tracking changes to specific attributes enables users to know what changes were made to CIs and assets, along with who made the changes and when.

Create records for the various locations in your company where assets and CIs are available. Users can easily link these location records to CIs and asset by using the Location field in the Instance Editor on the Remedyforce CMDB tab.
Specifying where assets and CIs are located enables users to manage them effectively.

Create models to standardize key attribute values, such as model name and manufacturer name, in CIs and assets.
Models restrict users from entering inconsistent values in specific attributes of a CI or an asset. Similarly, models are also applied to CMDB data that is imported from other sources. As a result, data is more likely to be consistent, making it easier to locate key information, analyze data, and generate relevant reports.
Create and manage normalization rules to standardize data in in BMC Remedyforce CMDB 2.0 and the models repository. Normalization is the process of applying rules to attribute values to avoid, or at least minimize, data inconsistency.
Based on your requirements, you can also enable the generation of normalization rule exceptions and then manage these exceptions
Configuring the normalization process is especially useful when data is imported on an ongoing basis from external sources, including discovery tools and spreadsheets.
|10.||Review the BMC Remedyforce CMDB Dashboard and BMC Remedyforce Asset Management Dashboard, and the reports that are available out of the box. Determine whether you need to customize the out-of-the-box reports or create new reports to meet your requirements.|
Integrate BMC Remedyforce CMDB with other products that you might be using, such as Dell KACE and BMC Client Management (known before version 12.0 as BMC FootPrints Asset Core).
Based on your requirements, import CIs and assets from other products in your environment, such as BMC Discovery (known before version 11.0 as BMC Atrium Discovery and Dependency Mapping) and Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager.
