Working with capacity pools

Capacity pools are used to group resources such as CPU, memory, and storage based on the business purpose.

Creating a capacity pool

A capacity pool can be created using entities that are selected explicitly or using rules based on tags.

You can also create a capacity pool comprising of AIX shared processor pools that contain VMware hosts and clusters.

To create a capacity pool using manual entities selection

The following video (2:59) illustrates the process of creating a Capacity Pool using manual entries for viewing in the Views tab:

Information

This video describes the functionality of TrueSight Capacity Optimization, but it is valid for BMC Helix Continuous Optimization too.

  1. Navigate to the Workspace tab and select the domain from the hierarchy.
  2. Click Add > Add capacity pool.
  3. Enter a Name and Description for the capacity pool.
  4. Select the Capacity Pool type.
  5. Select Manual from the Element selection.
  6. In the Elements area, select the elements you want to add to the capacity pool from the Available elements table and click >> to add them to the Selected elements table.
  7. In the Lookup Name field, type the required lookup name.
  8. Select the time duration for which the Domain-system relation will be valid. The default value is Always.
    • Select From Today if you want the domain-system relation to be valid only from today.
    • Select Always if you want the domain-system relation to be always valid.
    • Select a date from the From date field if you want the domain-system relation to be valid from a set date.
  9. Click Save.

To create a capacity pool using rule based entities selection

The following video (3:50) illustrates the process of creating a capacity pool based on tags for viewing in the Views tab.

Information

This video describes the functionality of TrueSight Capacity Optimization, but it is valid for BMC Helix Continuous Optimization too.

 https://youtu.be/SPm6y5sX4rY

  1. Navigate to the Workspace tab and select the domain from the hierarchy.
  2. Click Add > Add capacity pool.
  3. Enter a Name and Description for the capacity pool.
  4. Select the Capacity Pool type.
  5. Select Rule-based from the Entity selection to create the capacity pool using entities based on a rule that uses tags to identify entities.
  6. Use the Select tags list to select the tags that will be used to match the entities added to the capacity pool
  7. Select the Rule evaluation mode to select the mode used to evaluate and add entities to the capacity pool.
    • Select Manual and acknowledged to only add entities that currently have the selected tag(s).
    • Select Automatic to dynamically add entities to the capacity pool based on tag(s) that match.
  8. Select the time duration for which the domain-system relation will be valid. The default value is Always.
    • Select Today if you want the domain-system relation to be valid only from today.
    • Select Always if you want the domain-system relation to be always valid.
    • Select a date from the From date field if you want the domain-system relation to be valid from a set date.
  9. Click Save.

Capacity pool fields

The following table describes all the fields available from the Capacity Pool screen.

FieldDescription
NameName of the capacity pool.
DescriptionBrief description of the capacity pool. We recommend adding a description based on the entities you are adding to the capacity pool.
Capacity Pool type

Select the capacity pool type before selecting the entities to add to the capacity pool. The available types are:

AIX Power VM Hosts, AIX Shared Processor Pool, Hyper-V Clusters, Hyper-V Hosts, KVM Hosts, OpenStack Host Aggregate, Storage Pools, VMware Clusters, VMware Datastores, and VMware Hosts.

Entity selection
Select the mode you want to use for selecting entities for adding to the capacity pool. Select Manual to manually select entities or Rule-based to select entities based on rules.
Element Selection

After you select the capacity pool type, select the elements to add to the capacity pool.

This field is available only if you select Manual as the Entity selection.

Select tags

Select the Tag type, type the name of the Tag, and add it to the list of Selected tags. All entities that match the selected tags are added to the capacity pool. You can use the logical operators, AND or OR to fine tune the selected tags.

This field is available only if you select Rule-based as the Entity selection.

Rule evaluation mode

The Rule evaluation mode allows you to determine if entities are added once or dynamically to the capacity pool. Select Automatic if you want to automatically add new entities that match the tags to the capacity pool. Select Manual and acknowledged to manually acknowledge entities added to the capacity pool.

This field is available only if you select Rule-based as the Entity selection.

Lookup NameEnter a unique lookup name for the capacity pool.
Domain - system relation

Select the time duration for which the domain-system relation will be valid. The default value is Always.

  • Select From Today if you want the domain-system relation to be valid only from today.
  • Select Always if you want the domain-system relation to be always valid.
  • Select a date from the From date field if you want the domain-system relation to be valid from a set date.

Managing capacity pools

After you create a capacity pool, you can perform the following tasks.

TaskProcedure
Viewing a Capacity Pool

Using the Workspace hierarchy, navigate to the domain where you added the capacity pool, and click on it to view the capacity pool.

Adding tags to a Capacity Pool

You can add tags to a capacity pool after it is created.

Unassigning Capacity Pool Elements

Click Unassign selected elements to unassign elements that are grouped in the capacity pool. You might need to select and add other entities if you remove all elements associated with the capacity pool.

Editing a Capacity Pool

Click Edit to edit the values entered while creating a capacity pool. For more information, see Capacity pools fields.

Deleting a Capacity Pool

Click Delete to delete the capacity pool.

Moving a Capacity Pool

Click Move and select a domain to which you want to move the capacity pool.

Recalculating series

Click Recalculate series to start forced aggregation of derived metrics for the pool. You can use this forced aggregation to recover historical data or to force new data calculation in case of computation errors.

Specify a period for aggregation. The default is one month.
