Installing software as part of an IBM SoftLayer service offering


You can install additional software on the virtual machines (VMs) that are provisioned using the IBM SoftLayer Provider. You can create single-tier or multi-tier offerings.

Before you begin

To create a custom image of a VM with RSCD agent

You must create a custom image in the IBM SoftLayer management portal of a VM with the RSCD agent installed in it.

The following example procedure describes the steps for creating a custom image on the IBM SoftLayer management portal.

  1. Log on to the IBM SoftLayer management portal by using your IBM SoftLayer user-account credentials.
  2. Click Device List.
  3. Select a VM, and manually install the RSCD agent on the VM (Windows or Linux).
  4. Click the VM with the RSCD agent to open the Device Details page.
  5. Select Actions > Custom Image Template.

  6. Complete the Custom Image Template page.
    1. Enter a name in the Image Name field.
    2. Select the I agree to have my computing instance powered off check box.
    3. Click on Create Template button.

  7. Select Device > Manage > Images to view all created custom images.

 

To define an IBM SoftLayer service blueprint for installing custom software

Navigate to the Service Designer to specify the software installation as a part of the service offering, and perform the following steps:

  1. In the Application tab of the Blueprint Editor, select an application component. The Basic Details are as shown in the figure below:

  2. Click Software Packages and click image2014-2-25 15:59:9.png.

  3. Select the available software package and click OK.
    The selected software package is added in the service blueprint definition.
  4. (For multi-tier service blueprint model only) Navigate to the service Definition > Sequencing option, and click the Deployment Sequence tab, and then use the Up and Down arrows to configure the sequence in which service blueprint components are deployed when the service is requested. The following figure shows a definition of software application deployment in a two-tier service blueprint.

  5. Click Save to save the changes in the service blueprint.
  6. Check the service blueprint into the Blueprint Library.
