Fencing or Unfencing a server

Fencing or unfencing a server refers to parking or unparking a server at the Savvis Provider.

To fence or unfence a server

  1. From the list of servers in the Servers link of the My Services tab in the My Cloud Services Console, highlight the server that you want to fence or unfence.
  2. Choose one of these methods to perform the action:
    • Click the Operator Action and select the action (Fence or Unfence).
    • Right-click the server and choose the action from the Server pop-up menu.

The server or virtual machine (VM) is fenced or unfenced (parked or unparked) in the Savvis Provider.

Note

The Savvis Provider does not allow operations (start, stop, modify) on a parked VM. However, if you do perform any of these operations and the VM state changes in BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management, you can use the following workaround to correct the VM state:

If you perform the Start/Stop operation on a fenced server, the state of the server changes to Running/Stopped on BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management but not in the Savvis Provider. If your action caused the fenced server state to change, you must re-fence the server, which should correct the state on BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management.
