Using BMC ProactiveNet Data Collection Host to add vCenters or companies

Run the BMC ProactiveNet Data Collection Host standalone installation for one or more of the following reasons:

  • You do not have connection information for virtual machine monitors during the BMC Cloud Lifecycle Management Installer process.
  • You want to monitor additional virtual machine monitors using an existing data collection host.

Before you begin

Before you install BMC ProactiveNet Data Collection Host:

To install BMC ProactiveNet Data Collection Host from a standalone installation

Note

The installation windows might vary, depending on your system's configuration and the choices that you make during installation.

  1. Run the BMC ProactiveNet Data Collection Host installation program.
    1. On the BMC ProactiveNet Server computer, start the BMC ProactiveNet Data Collection Host installation program:
      1. In the System Properties dialog box, turn on Data Execution Prevention (DEP) for BPPMserverBuildFolder\DCH\Disk1\InstData\VM\setup.exe.
      2. From the installation DVD, run the setup.cmd file from the BPPMserverBuildFolder\DCH\Disk1 folder.
    2. In the Welcome window, click Next.
    3. In the License Agreement window, read the agreement, and select I agree to the terms of the license agreement. Click Next.
    4. In the Directory Selection window, edit, type, or browse to a directory on the BMC ProactiveNet Server to install files for the BMC ProactiveNet Data Collection Host.
      The default path is C:\Program Files\BMC Software\DataCollectionHost.
  2. Configure the BMC ProactiveNet Server connection to the BMC ProactiveNet Data Collection Host.
    In the Data Collection Host Connection window, type the following information and click Next:
    • BMC ProactiveNet Server: Name or IP address of the BMC ProactiveNet Server computer
    • Data Collection Host: Name or IP address of the computer targeted for BMC ProactiveNet Data Collection Host
  3. Configure BMC BladeLogic initialization.
    1. In the BMC BladeLogic Initialization Options window, select the relevant options and click Next:
      • If you have not yet loaded the BMC BladeLogic packages, select Load BMC BladeLogic monitoring infrastructure packages.
        The monitoring infrastructure packages need to be loaded only once per BMC BladeLogic Application Server.
      • If you did not set BMC BladeLogic connection information when you installed BMC ProactiveNet Server, select Change and validate BMC BladeLogic connection information.
    2. If you selected Change and validate BMC BladeLogic connection information, enter the BMC BladeLogic connection information and click Next.
  4. Set up the BMC ProactiveNet Agent installation and configuration.
    1. In the Remote ProactiveNet Agent Installation window, if a remote BMC ProactiveNet Agent cannot be found on the data collection host computer, select one of the following options and click Next:
      • Install remote BMC ProactiveNet Agent (recommended)
      • Use local BMC ProactiveNet Agent (for Proof of Concept deployment only)
    2. In the BMC ProactiveNet Agent and Integration Service Information window, confirm or update the following values:

  5. Configure the BMC PATROL Agents and virtual machine monitors.
    1. In the Virtual Machine Monitor Selection window, enter 1, 2, or 3 for the Number of virtual machine monitors to add, and then click Next.
      If a BMC PATROL Agent is detected on the data collection host, the existing agent port numbers are listed in the window.

    2. In the BMC PATROL Agent and Virtual Machine Monitor Information window, enter the following information for each VMM and click Next:

      For the first BMC PATROL Agent, confirm or edit the directory for the BMC PATROL Agent. The default value is C:\Program Files\BMC Software\Patrol
      This field is displayed only if a BMC PATROL Agent is not already installed on the data collection host.

      BMC PATROL Agent port

      Enter the BMC PATROL Agent port number.
      Specify an existing port to add the VMM to an existing BMC PATROL Agent.
      If you specify the same BMC PATROL Agent port for more than one VMM, the VMMs will be monitored using the same BMC PATROL Agent.

      Virtual machine monitor host

      Enter the name or IP address for the virtual machine monitor computer.

      Virtual machine monitor port

      Enter the port number for the virtual machine monitor computer.

      Virtual machine monitor user name

      Enter a user name with at least read permission.

      Virtual machine monitor password

      Enter the password for the user.

      Is this a Xen virtual machine monitor?

      Select Yes if you are using a Xen virtual machine monitor and provide the information for the following options.

      • Pool ID

      Enter the resource pool ID for the virtual machine monitor.

      • Pool regular expression

      Enter regular expressions, separated by a space, for host names or IP addresses that match the hosts from which performance data will be collected.
      For example, enter xen.* to monitor hosts starting with xen, such as xenVM1 and xenVM2.
      To collect from multiple hosts simultaneously, each host must have the same user account with the same password.

      • Pool regular expression password

      Enter resource pool credentials to collect performance data from hosts.
      To collect from multiple hosts simultaneously, each host must have the same user account with the same password.

  6. Review the installation details in the Installation Preview page and click Previous to modify options, or click Install to begin the installation.
