Note

BMC Real End User Experience Monitoring Software Edition version 11.0.00.002 is the latest version of the component and is compatible with TrueSight Operations Management versions 11.3.01 and later.

The Real User Cloud Probe monitors the network performance of traffic to a virtual machine through a cloud provider. The Cloud Probe sends information through the Real User Collector on a BMC Real End User Experience Monitoring system.

You can install the Real User Cloud Probe on Linux or Windows.

Tip

For best results while capturing end-user performance data, install the Cloud Probe on the host that provides load balancing services for an application. By binding the public interface used by the load balancing services, end-user transactions can be accurately measured and processed.

To install the Real User Cloud Probe on Linux

Before you run the installation utility, set up a DISPLAY environment.

If you are installing the TrueSight Presentation Server by using the graphical user interface, you must install X Windows.

On the Red Hat Enterprise Linux terminal, type yum grouplist and check that X Window System is listed.  If not, then run yum groupinstall 'X Window System' to install the necessary packages.

  1. Log on as root to the system where you will install the Real User Cloud Probe.
  2. At a command prompt, unzip the Cloud Probe installation distribution file that you downloaded from the EPD by using the following command:
    tar -xzvf cloud_probe_linux_<v.r.mm>.tar.gz
  3. Navigate to the extracted installation directory, such as cloud_probe_rh6, and run the ./setup.bin command.
  4. On the Welcome page, click Next.
  5. Read the License Agreement, agree to the terms, and click Next.
  6. Retain the default installation directory or change it, and click Next
    The default is /opt/bmc/CloudProbe.

  7. Enter the following connection details for the Real User Collector, and click Next:
    • IP address or DNS name of the computer with the Collector installation
    • Port number of the Collector (by default, 8443)
If a different port number was used during installation of the Real User Collector, enter that port number.

    • The user name that represents the operator-level user name to log in to the Collector.
    • Collector password
  8. Enter the Cloud Probe name and select the monitored network card from the list. Click Next.

    Tip

You can also use the ifconfig  or the ip link commands to see a list of the available NICs on the system. Network card names are in the following form: eth0, eno1, ens32, enp2s0

The Cloud Probe Name can have up to 60 alphanumeric characters, hyphens (-), and underscore characters (_). The name is displayed in the Real User Collector.

  9. Review the installation details, and click Install
  10. To view the installation log, click the View Log button, or go to /tmp/cloudprobe_install_log.txt.
  11. Click Done to close the installation utility.
  12. Verify the Cloud Probe installation and service.

Run the following command to ensure that the Cloud Probe process is up and running:

    ps –ef | grep cloud

If you have installed a Cloud Probe on a Red Hat Linux 5.8 operating system, and the agent does not start after installation, change the maximum packet size (in bytes) allowed for the EPX:

    1. Open the epx_properties.conf file located in [CloudProbeInstallDir]/cloudprobe/conf folder.
    2. Change the value of the SYSTEM.PROPERTIES.EPX.global.max_packet_size parameter. You can set the maximum packet size value between 1500 and 65535 bytes.

    3. Start the Cloud Probe service using the service cloud-probe start command.
    • In the Real User Collector to which you connected the Cloud Probe, select Administration > Integration, then click Cloud Probes. Find your Cloud Probe instance in the list and ensure it is processing traffic data. For details, see  Monitoring Cloud Probe system health on a Collector. Open link
    • In the Real User Analyzer, select System Deployment > Components, and click on the Real User Collector to which you connected the Cloud Probe. Find your Cloud Probe instance in the list and ensure it is processing traffic data. For details, see  Monitoring Cloud Probe system health on a Collector. Open link

  13. If you use encrypted traffic, configure the SSL keys Open link  for traffic decryption.

To install the Real User Cloud Probe on Windows

  1. Download Open link and install latest version of WinPcap.
WinPcap is a packet capture driver that is necessary for correct functioning of Cloud Probe under Windows.
  2. Extract the Cloud Probe installation files that you downloaded from EPD.
  3. Run the Real User Cloud Probe installation file (setup.exe) as Administrator.
  4. In the Directory Destination step of the installation wizard, select installation destination folder and click Next.
  5. In the Real User Collector Configuration step, provide the Real User Collector details:
    • IP or DNS name and port
If a different port number was used during installation of the Real User Collector, enter that port number.

    • Security or Operator user account and password
  6. In the BMC Real User Cloud Probe Configuration step, specify the display name of the Cloud Probe instance and the monitored network card. Click Install.

    Tip

To check, which of the available network cards the Cloud Probe should monitor, open command line and run getmac /v command. It returns the list of available network cards with name, type of the connection, network adapter, physical address and so on.

  7. After installation, ensure that the staging folder <InstallationDir>\cloudprobe\staging has WRITE permissions enabled for Administrators group.

  8. Verify the Cloud Probe installation and service.

Open the Services list and verify that BMC Real User Cloud Probe service is started.

Open link

Next Step in the Installation process

Step 7 Phase C Task 1 — Now that you have successfully installed Cloud Probe, you must establish traffic data feeds between an Analyzer and a Collector.
