Support for third-party products

To receive full support for a BMC product, you must have that product installed in a supported environment, as specified in the BMC product documentation. If a third-party vendor cancels support for one of its products (such as an operating system or subsystem), and that third-party product integrates or interacts with the BMC product you have licensed, you must upgrade to a supported version of that third-party product before BMC Customer Support can provide you with support for the affected BMC product. For further information, see BMC's product support policy. Open link

Before installing PATROL for VMware vSphere, verify that the target computer meets the installation requirements listed in the following table.

Java Runtime Environment (JRE)

Supports any of the following Java versions:

  • Oracle Java 8.x
  • OpenJDK 8.x
  • OpenJDK 11.x
  • OpenJDK  16.X
  • OpenJDK  1.8

Note: For the latest announcement on BMC’s Java Support policies for TrueSight monitoring solutions, see Java support for TrueSight monitoring solutions

To monitor without using the new Oracle License, BMC recommends that you change the monitoring configuration to use the OpenJDK version 11.x.

To update the Java path settings, see Configuring Vmware vSphere.

OpenJDK 11 support is available in PATROL for VMware vSphere 4.0.20.01 and later.

Ports

If you are installing an agent or console with PATROL for VMware vSphere, you must specify the port number to connect to all the agent computers.

The default port number is 3181 for agents.

Deployment system requirements

The following table lists the system requirements to set up VMware vCenter Server based on the size of the enterprise. To know the number of PATROL Agents required in your environment, see Determining the number of PATROL Agents required to monitor VMware vCenter Server.

SizeNumber of VMsNumber of PATROL instancesNumber of parametersBMC PATROL Agent and BMC PATROL for VMware vSphere
Small500800030,0002 CPU (2 GHz), 4 GB RAM, and 20 GB disk space
Medium150025,000100,000Dedicated 2 CPU (2 GHz), 4 GB RAM, and 20 GB disk space
Large250045,000175,000Dedicated 4 CPU (2 GHz), 8 GB RAM, and 20 GB disk

Note

  • For medium and large production VMware vCenter Server monitoring, all components must be installed on a 64-bit operating system and must run in 64-bit mode.
  • The scalability information is based on the controlled and internal testing of BMC ProactiveNet Server, BMC ProactiveNet Integration Service, BMC PATROL Agent, and BMC PATROL for VMware vSphere. The provided values represent the maximum value recommended for each component. If you have reached the maximum value for any component, the other components might not be scaled beyond the actual value that you have used. For example, with 40,000 PATROL instances, if you are monitoring 175,000 parameters, you cannot scale the PATROL instances beyond 40,000.

BMC products are certified for use on supported operating system versions. BMC does not explicitly test for OS patches/updates that are released after a BMC product is released.

BMC products should work fine with minor updates to these supported operating systems. For assistance, please contact BMC Customer Support.

I need planning information for PATROL for Virtual Servers v4.0 installation.

    • how much memory is need to monitor a vCenter with 800 hosts and 6,000 VMs
    • does it need a dedicated server, how many CPUS an what speed
    • what is the impact to vCenter of collecting metrics for 800 hosts and 6,000 VMs

This was critical information to setup PATROL for Virtual Server v3.2 and I don't see any of that here. This is a system requirement section of the planning page. Is it hidden somewhere else?
