Upgrading BMC Helix Data Manager
Upgrade your BMC Helix Data Manager to a later version by performing the end-to-end tasks described in this topic. The installation wizard upgrades all required components of BMC Helix Data Manager and optionally, upgrades the drivers and command-line tools necessary to perform migrations.
To prepare for the upgrade
Make sure that you have performed the following tasks:
- Downloaded the latest version of BMC Helix Data Manager installer. For steps on downloading the installer, see Downloading-the-installation-files.
- If you have modified any configurations in the coreconfig.xml file, take a backup of the coreconfig.xml file.
Navigate to <Installation_folder>\Helix Data Manager\Engine\conf folder and take a backup of the coreconfig.xml file.
To upgrade BMC Helix Data Manager from versions before 21.3.05
To upgrade BMC Helix Data Manager from versions before 21.3.05, you must uninstall the previous version and then re-install the latest version on your environment.
Perform the following steps:
- On your existing BMC Helix Data Manager, export and take a backup of the following metadata:
- Migration packs
- Export the Form Counts and Reconciliation reports
- Comprehensive reports
- Comparison reports, if any
- Uninstall the existing version of your BMC Helix Data Manager by performing the steps in Uninstalling.
- Install the latest version of BMC Helix Data Manager by performing the steps provided in Performing-the-installation.
- After you complete the installation, reconnect the system connectivity for both source and target environments, by performing the steps provided in Actions-you-can-perform-on-a-system-you-have-registered.
- Re-create the file system configuration by performing the steps provided in Configuring-a-file-system-connection.
- Import the backup migration packs, Form Counts and Reconciliation reports, and any other reports to the newly installed version of BMC Helix Data Manager.
To upgrade BMC Helix Data Manager from version 21.3.05 to the latest 21.3.05.xx version
- Unzip the Install BMC Helix Data Managerxx.xx.zip package and run InstallHDMxx.xx.exe.
The installation wizard is displayed. - Click Next.
- Review and accept the terms of the BMC Helix Data Manager License Agreement and click Next.
- Accept or define the installation path. Click Next to proceed.
If you accepted the default installation path, a Folder Exists popup appears on the screen. - Perform one of the following steps:
- Accept the default installation path and click Yes.
The Folder Exists popup window is displayed. - Define an installation path and click Yes.
- Accept the default installation path and click Yes.
- Select the type of upgrade you want to perform:
- Full Installation – Repository, Engine & Workbench
- Workbench only
- Repository only
- Engine only
- Click Next.
- On the HDM Repository Password screen, enter the password in the Repository Password field.
If you want to use the default password, keep the Repository Password field blank. If you want to use a different password, enter the password in the Repository Password field. - Click Next.
Review the installation configuration and click Install to start the upgrade.
The following pop-up window is displayed if you are using a previous version of PostgreSQL:- To continue the upgrade, click Yes.
- After the upgrade is complete, click Finish.
- (Optional) Restore the backup of the coreconfig.xml file to the <Installation_folder>\Helix Data Manager\Engine\conf folder.
To verify the upgrade
Perform the following steps to verify the BMC Helix Data Manager upgrade:
- Open the BMC Helix Data Manager desktop shortcut.
- Log in with the user name and password.
- On the Home page, click About.
- On the About BMC HDM screen, verify that the upgraded version number is displayed.
Perform the following steps to verify the PostgreSQL upgrade:
- Navigate to the BMC Helix Data Manager installation folder. By default, the installation folder is C:\Program Files\BMC Software\Helix Data Manager.
Run the following command from the folder:
Repository\pgsql\bin\pg_config.exe --version- Verify that the PostgreSQL is upgraded.
