Registering a system for Smart IT
To get started with the data migration for BMC Helix ITSM: Smart IT, register a system for Smart IT and Openfire.
To register a system
- Log in to BMC Helix Data Manger.
- Navigate to the Configurations tab and select Register & Configure Systems.
- On the System page, navigate to the System Info tab.
- Click Create .
After clicking Create or Modify, the fields are enabled for input.
From the Type list, select Relational Database.
Complete the following fields:
Field
Description
Display Name
Name of the source or target system.
The Display name need not match the network address.
Environment
Name of the environment that this Smart IT system is part of.
Select DEFAULT.
Location
Location of the database. Options are:
- Local
- Remote
System Type
This option is for display purposes only, it does not affect the behavior of BMC Helix Data Manager when it interacts with this system.
Options are:
- Development
- Production
- QA
- UAT (user acceptance testing)
(Optional) If you selected Local for the Location field, complete the following fields on the Database tab.
Field
Description
Database Type
Type of database that is hosting the system.
Options are:
- MS SQL
- Oracle
- PostgresSQL
- Sybase
Depending on the option you select, the fields will change on the tab.
Network Address
Network address for the database server hosting Remedy. BMC Helix Data Manager Engine must be able to resolve this address. The BMC Helix Data Manager Workbench never directly accesses the Remedy server.
Port
Port on which the Smart IT database server is listening for incoming SQL connections.
Use Windows Authentication
Option to use Window Authentication.
If selected, BMC Helix Data Manager uses Window Authentication.
Enabled for Data Migration
Option to enable the system for data migration.
If selected, the system is enabled for migrating data, and one of the following fields appear, depending on the database type you selected:
- DB Collation—Manually add the database collation value (for example, SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS). Or allow the field to be automatically completed by selecting Action > Get Character Database Set after you register the system.
- DB Character Set—Enter the respective database character set value.
MS SQL
Instance Name
Name of the database MS SQL instance name. The name can be the name of the physical machine, or the DBA can define the name.
Database Name
MS SQL database name, typically SmartIT.
Migration Mode
Migration mode that will be used.
Options are:
- Bcp
- JDBC
Oracle
Service Name/SID
Service name or SID value.
Select Service Name or SID, and enter the corresponding value in the field below.
Schema Name
Oracle schema name, typically SmartIT admin.
PostgresSQL
Instance Name
Name of the database PostgresSQL instance name. The name can be the name of the physical machine, or the DBA can define the name.
Database Name
PostgresSQL database name, typically SmartIT.
Sybase
Service Name/SID
Select Service Name or SID, and enter the corresponding value in the field below.
Schema Name
Sybase schema name, typically SmartIT admin.
HDM User
Name of the database user that BMC Helix Data Manager will use to access the Smart IT database server and the underlying Smart IT database. The manual database configuration scripts typically use “hdm” as the database user name.
HDM Password
Password for the database user that BMC Helix Data Manager uses to access the Smart IT database server and the underlying Smart IT database. Use one that meets your local security policy.
The following image shows an example:

- (Optional) If you selected Remote for the Location field, complete the following fields on the Database tab.
- Select Enabled for Data Migration.
- Complete one of the following fields, which appears based on the type of database you selected:
- DB Collation—Manually add the database collation value (for example, SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS). Or allow the field to be automatically completed by selecting Action > Get Character Database Set after you register the system.
- DB Character Set—Enter the respective database character set value.
On the Schemas tab, click Create , and complete the following fields:

Schema Name
Schema name of the database.
Logical Name
Logical name of the database.
Important:
For the Smart IT source system, you must specify the logical names of Business and System schemas as Business and System.

For the Smart IT target system, specify the value as Default.

- Click Save (
) on the System Info tab.
