Viewing objects in an object list

To find objects on a server in the AR System Navigator, open a branch on the tree and double-click the object. (The AR System Navigator view opens automatically when you start Developer Studio.)

When you open an object from AR System Navigator, objects are displayed in an object list. Each object list that you open appears in a separate tab.  Then, you can double-click an item (such as a form) in the object list to open it.

If you open a working list, application, or packing list, it appears in an object list tab with panels that allow you to explore the working list, application, or packing list.

To open a large object list without timing out

If time-out problems occur when you try to open an object list, use one of the following procedures to selectively display the columns in the list for that object type.

To display only the Basic Columns in the list

  1. Select Window > Preferences to open the Preferences dialog box.
  2. In the Developer Studio branch, click Object List View.
  3. In the Object List View panel, select the appropriate object type.
  4. Select the Basic Columns option.
  5. Click OK.
The object list for the selected object type should now open quickly because it contains only the basic columns of each object.

To select columns that should not be displayed

  1. Select Window > Preferences to open the Preferences dialog box.
  2. In the Developer Studio branch, click Object List View.
  3. In the Object List View panel, select the appropriate object type.
  4. Choose a column that is not required and click on the Display settings for the column.
  5. Select No from the Display drop-down list. (See the following image.)

Columns with Display set to No are not fetched from the database. This reduces the time taken to load the object list in Developer Studio.
Hiding certain CLOB columns also improves the time taken to load the object list. You can hide the following CLOB columns:

    CLOB column

    Object type

    Lock State

    Present on all object types

    Access Point

    Applicable to Form and Guides

    Pool Number

    Escalation

The columns Primary Form and Shared are not CLOB, but hiding these columns increases performance .

To sort the contents of an object list

Click a column heading to sort the list by that column.

To locate an object in an object list

  1. Select an object in the list.
  2. Enter the first few characters of the name of the object that you want to find.

To filter the contents in an object list

  1. Click Filtering Options text at the top of the object list to open the filtering options panel.
  2. From the first drop-down list, select the column to use to filter the object list.
For a single object list, the columns shown are the columns in the list. For an application, packing list, or working list views and for search results, the columns shown are the columns configured for all object types in the list.
  3. From the second drop-down list, select the compare operation.
The compare operations available depend on the data type of the column selected.
  4. In the text field, type the value to match.

To refresh objects in a list

Select File > Refresh. The Refresh option is useful when you add objects to an application but the objects are not immediately visible in the application object list. For example, when you attach a menu to a field on a form in an application, the menu is associated with the application, but the application list might not immediately recognize that association.

To change the columns shown in an object list

  1. Select Window > Preferences to open the Preferences dialog box.
  2. In the Developer Studio branch, click Object List View to show the Object List View preferences.
  3. In the list, select the object type.
  4. To display only the Name column, select the Basic Columns option, and go to step 9.
Selecting Basic Columns is useful if an objects list has tens of thousands of objects, which could potentially cause a time-out when you try to open the object list.
  5. If the All Columns option (the default) is selected, change the value in the Display column to show or hide columns in the object list.
  6. Use the Up and Down buttons to position the columns.
  7. Use the Import button to read column preferences from an XML file, or use the Export button to write preferences to an XML file.
  8. Click Restore Defaults to restore the object list configuration for the selected object type to the defaults.
  9. Click OK to save your changes.
  10. Close and reopen the object list to see your changes.

To change the layout of an object list

  • Click the appropriate layout button in the Applications tab (see the following figure).

    • Single list ( IconSingleList.gif)
    • View by type ( IconViewByType.gif)
    • View by form ( IconViewByForm.gif

Switching a list of many objects to single list layout can take some time as information about all of the objects is retrieved.

To close all object lists

Right-click any item in the AR System Navigator and select Close all open Object Lists from the pop-up menu.
