Exploring asset relationships

An Asset Manager must understand the context of an asset in relation to other assets and CIs. From the Asset tab, you can access the Smart IT CI Explorer to get a visual representation of an asset and other assets related to it.

You can filter data using the asset relationship type list and Filter (Filter.gif) option provided at the top of the window. The Filter option allows you to filter data based on specific asset attributes.

In the Smart IT CI Explorer, each asset type is denoted with an icon to make it easy for you to identify the type. The icon guide link (iconGuide.gif) at the top-right corner of the window provides descriptions of the icons

The Close option closes the Smart IT CI explorer and returns you to the asset record.

Viewing asset relationships in the Graphical CI Explorer

The Graphical CI explorer is available only on the Smart IT Universal Client and displays a relationship diagram of the asset.

To drill down to view related assets, expand or collapse the diagram. Double-click an asset to view its related assets.

The following additional options are available in the Graphical CI explorer for easy navigation through the relationship tree:

zoom.gif

Zoom in or out of a view to change the size of the diagram.

reset.gif

Reset to the default view of the explorer.

view_parents.gif

View the parent assets of the root asset you are viewing.

expand.gif

Expand or collapse the relationship diagram to view or hide all related child assets and their children assets.

Note: If the number of related assets exceeds 100, you are prompted to add filters to reduce the total number of related assets that are displayed.

Select an asset on the diagram for a quick view of the asset details.

Note

Smart IT Graphical CI explorer doesn't support CI graph traversal. Only directly related CIs of the Starting Asset are displayed in Graphical CI explorer.

Viewing asset relationships in the List CI Explorer

The List CI Explorer displays a list view of the asset relationships, and navigation options that enable you to drill down into the related assets.

Select the relationship type and filters for an asset. Based on your selections, the list view displays the asset and its parent assets. Click the  View Relationships link to view a list of the related assets. As you drill down, a breadcrumb bar is displayed at the top of the window, allowing you to navigate back to the original asset and parent list.
