Merging duplicate CIs by reconciling data from multiple sources

The reconciliation process helps create a reliable and robust production data set in the CMDB. In the first part of this process, the normalization process standardizes information about the discovered configuration items (CIs). Then, the reconciliation process identifies and merges duplicate CIs.

Best practice
We recommend that you reconcile only CIs that have been normalized or that do not require normalization. To reconcile the appropriate CIs, enable the Process Normalized CIs Only option in the Create Job or Edit Job window.

Task

Reference

Define the precedence value for a dataset in a merge activity.

Understand the rules that precedence values follow.

Create rules to limit the number of instances that a reconciliation activity processes.

Create a set of prioritized rules that define how CI instances in different data sets are identified as the same entity.

Understand the guidelines for an effective reconciliation process.

Create a reconciliation job that uses all the defined precedences, qualification rules, and identification rules to run the reconciliation process.

Use the IgnoreMultiMatchedInstance option to avoid processing the same CIs in multiple reconciliation identification job runs.

Manage the precedence values for datasets with NULL values.

Understand conventions to build qualification rules for reconciliation.

Identify instances by using the identification activity in a reconciliation job.

Understand the merge activity settings.

Define a qualification rule by using the Qualification Builder.

Manage and filter reconciliation jobs by viewing the status, activities in the job, datasets, and job run history.

Run a reconciliation job with an active link, filter, or an escalation.

Understand namespaces for classes in a reconciliation job.

Use the compare activity in a reconciliation job to compare differences in datasets.

Use the execute activity in a reconciliation job to run other reconciliation jobs in a sequence.

Reconciliation engine permissions

To configure the reconciliation engine, you must have the following permissions:

  • CMDB RE User
  • CMDB RE Definitions Admin
