Post-Mortem Analyzer

Post‑Mortem Analyzer helps IT Operations and site reliability engineering teams analyze resolved incidents and learn from past failures. After a major incident or outage is closed, it generates a structured post‑incident review that explains what happened, why it happened, how it was resolved, and how similar issues can be prevented in the future.

Post‑incident reviews are often manual and time‑consuming. Post‑mortem Analyzer addresses this by automating post‑incident analysis, enabling teams to consistently capture learnings and improve system reliability over time.

To use Post-Mortem Analyzer, make sure that the required product licenses are available. For more information, see BMC Helix AIOps service.

Post‑Mortem Analyzer Capabilities

Post‑Mortem Analyzer provides the following capabilities:

  • Performs the 5 Why analysis in Ask HelixGPT for a situation
  • Analyzes the situation by repeatedly asking Why did the situation take place
  • Identifies the underlying root cause of the situation

Scenario

Information

Scenario: Run 5 Whys to perform a post-mortem analysis of a situation

Susan, an SRE at Apex Global, is responsible for monitoring a customer‑facing e‑commerce service using BMC Helix AIOps. During peak business hours, AIOps detects a surge in latency‑related events and automatically creates a situation for the service. The service health score drops, and customers begin reporting slow checkout performance.

Susan investigates the situation and, after reviewing the situation summary and related insights, runs 5 Whys to understand why the issue occurred and to document it for post‑incident review.

She traces the issue from slow application response to high CPU usage, excessive retries, and ultimately a recent configuration change that introduced incorrect timeout settings.
