Employees of the organization log in to the BMC Helix Digital Workplace consoles according to their roles and requirements. Roles determine what data and user interface consoles users can access and the actions they can perform. For more information about user roles, see User roles.
You can use any supported mobile device or desktop browser for accessing and navigating BMC Helix Digital Workplace consoles. To learn more about accessing the consoles from mobile devices, see Access-from-anywhere-anytime-on-any-device.
The BMC Helix Digital Workplace user interface times out if the application remains idle for the duration set by the administrator in BMC Helix Single Sign-On. For more information about configuring the timeout in BMC Helix Single Sign-On, see Enabling idle timeout for integrated BMC applications.
After an administrator configures the idle timeout duration, all open BMC Helix Digital Workplace applications automatically time out if there is no activity for the specified duration. Before the applications time out, you can see an idle timeout message on the user interface. Use this message window to extend your activity and prevent the application from timing out. The idle timeout is applicable to the external portal if the external portal is integrated with BMC Helix Single Sign-On.
BMC Helix Digital Workplace does not time out in the following conditions:
- You are working in any BMC application through the BMC Helix Digital Workplace interface, for example BMC Helix ITSM or Business Workflows.
- You are watching a video that you play within BMC Helix Digital Workplace. The idle timeout message appears if the video pauses and the system detects no activity on the user interface.
However, the idle timeout configuration is not applicable for any videos that you play from a knowledge article that you access from BMC Helix Digital Workplace. - You have opened several BMC applications in the same browser window, and you are active in at least one BMC application.
For example, if you have BMC Helix Digital Workplace and BMC Helix Innovation Studio open in the same browser window, BMC Helix Digital Workplace does not time out even if you are active only in BMC Helix Innovation Studio.
Overview of user consoles in the BMC Helix Digital Workplace
BMC Helix Digital Workplace provides different interfaces for users based on their roles and actions. Administrators, Catalog administrators, end users, and external users can access the following consoles to perform their tasks:

External portal | Access BMC Helix Digital Workplace by an external portal as an external user. External users can register with their own email address and will have limited access to the BMC Helix Digital Workplace features. They can use the external portal to request services, find knowledge articles, and view notifications. For more information, see Portal-for-external-users.

| Guest portal | Access BMC Helix Digital Workplace by using a guest portal as a guest user. A guest portal serves as a user-friendly gateway to information, services, and resources without requiring users to log in or disclose their personal identity. It is designed to provide stakeholders with easy access and quick transactions for public services.
