This topic provides suggested solutions for issues that you might encounter when installing BMC Decision Support – Database Automation.

Installation fails if the target directory contains spaces

The installation program fails with an error message similar to the following one:

'D:\BMC' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program, or batch file

This type of error occurs in the following situations:

  • If you are trying to install the product in a directory path that
    • Contains spaces, and
    • Was created when 8.3 (short) name creation was disabled
  • If the 8.3 name creation is disabled and the directories are being created by the installation program

Note

The steps to resolve this issue involve editing of the registry. Back up the registry before you make any changes to it.

Solution

  1. If one or more directories contain spaces and do not have the short names created, delete those directories and skip to step 2.
If you do not want to delete those directories, follow these steps:
    1. Enable the 8.3 name creation. To enable the 8.3 name creation, set the value of the NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation registry entry to 0 (enabled for all volumes on the system) or 2 (enabled for all volumes except the system volume).
    2. Restart the computer.
    3. Create the substitute directories, and restart the installation with the new directory path.
  2. Ensure that the 8.3 name creation is enabled. To enable the 8.3 name creation, set the value of the NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation registry entry to 0 (enabled for all volumes on the system) or 2 (enabled for all volumes except the system volume).
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. Create directories with the desired name, and restart the installation.
