Clustered database


With a clustered database, a physical network connects a set of two or more hardware nodes to form a single logical database server.

Each node typically runs one instance of each clustered database that exists in the cluster. All of these nodes can access a single storage device simultaneously, enabling clients to connect to any instance and have access to the same data. Additionally, this database architecture provides built-in fault tolerance. If one node or database fails, other nodes remain active to process requests.

An example of an Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) configuration is shown in the following figure.
