Components of FDR

The FDR DASD Management System consists of a number of components and options. The functions that you can perform with FDR programs depend on the terms of the license your organization has with BMC, the developer, and the vendor of FDR.

Basic components

Almost all licenses for FDR include the following components:

FDR-Fast-Dump-Restore

Performs full-volume backup and restore, as well as full-volume DASD-to-DASD copies. A utility (FDRTCOPY) is included to copy FDR backup tapes.

FDRDSF-Data-Set-Functions

Performs backup and restore of selected data sets and VSAM clusters. It can also do data set restores from full-volume backup tapes produced by FDR. (For more information, see FDRDSF-Data-Set-Functions.)

FDRCOPY-Copy-or-Move-Data-Sets

Performs DASD-to-DASD copy of selected data sets and VSAM clusters. (For more information, see FDRCOPY-Copy-or-Move-Data-Sets.)

SAR - Stand Alone Restore

An IPLable program that does full-volume restore, so that you can restore FDR backups even when your operating system is not working (such as restoring a failed DASD that is required for an operating system IPL). It can also do full-volume backup and can relabel DASD volumes. (For more information, see SAR - Stand Alone Restore.)

Optional components

Your license might include some or all of the following optional components:

FASTCPK

Reorganizes DASD volumes to maximize free space for new allocations, and to reduce the number of extents occupied by data sets. COMPAKTOR usually takes only a few minutes per volume. For more information, see COMPAKTOR-CPK-DASD-Volume-Reorganization.

FDRABR (Automatic Backup and Recovery)

Automates the management of DASD, providing regular full-volume and incremental (only changed data set) backups, space management by archiving unused or unneeded data sets with automatic recall if they are later required, and application backups to preserve all data sets required by a specific application. FDRABR includes a number of reporting and management programs. For more information, see FDRABR-Volume-Backups.

FDRAPPL (Application Backup)

FDRAPPL is a part of FDRABR, but it can also be licensed separately. It is used to backup and restore data sets by application. For more information, see FDRAPPL-Application-Backup. It requires FDR Basic license.

FDRREORG

Automates the reorganization of Partitioned Data Sets (PDSs), VSAM clusters, and Innovation Access Method (IAM) files. This also adds support for PDS reorganization to FDRCOPY. For more information, see FDRREORG-Reorganization-and-Compression.

The new feature in FDRREORG greatly improves reorganization processing for IAM Extended Format Data Sets. For more information, see Dynamic Reorganization of IAM Data Sets on the FDR website.

FDREPORT

Is a powerful and highly flexible reporting program, which can report on data from a number of sources (catalog, VTOC, VVDS, FDRABR information, DFSMShsm BCDS/MCDS, DFSMSrmm, and more). FDREPORT includes support for extracting information from Broadcom CA 1 and IBM DFSMSrmm. The user can specify the contents and format of the report. Sorting and summaries are provided, and JCL or other control statements can be generated. FDRABR users are automatically licensed for FDREPORT, but it can be separately licensed. FDRREORG - Reorganization and Compression FDREPORT - Generalized Report Writer.

FDRDRP (Disaster Recovery Program)

Significantly reduces the elapsed time required to restore many volumes from FDRABR volume backups, by minimizing tape mounts. For more information, see FDRDRP.

FDRWEB

FDRWEB is an interactive, browser based, web application that provides users with insight into their operating system DASD and TAPE storage configuration and usage through an intuitive, easy to use graphic interface. FDRWEB allows users to gather data from a variety of sources, including the FDRREPORT engine, and generate custom detail as well as summary reports relating to their operating system DASD and TAPE storage. FDRWEB can, optionally, provide its output as downloadable CSV files, allowing easy import by other programs for analysis or charting, such as Microsoft Excel.

Warning

Important

It is possible to license FASTCPK and FDREPORT separately. FDRABR requires an FDR license with the basic components listed above. FDRDRP requires that you are licensed for FDRABR.

Optional functions

Your license may include these optional functions:

FDRINSTANT

Enhances FDR and FDRABR to use features of certain DASD subsystems, the TimeFinder and SnapShot features on EMC Symmetrix systems, the ShadowImage feature Hitachi Vantara systems and the FlashCopy feature on IBM and some other vendors’ systems, to create point-in-time backups and copies of DASD data. An image of the data on DASD can be frozen at a particular point-in-time and backed up while updates to the original data continue.

The enhancements to FDR, FDRDSF, and FDRCOPY work with almost any DASD subsystem and allow you to create offline point-in-time images of entire DASD volumes. The point-in-time images can be backed up with FDR or FDRDSF or copied with FDRCOPY, even though they remain offline to the operating system.

FDRINSTANT also enhances FDRABR volume backups (full-volume and incremental backups) to provide instant backups. In addition, it enhances FDRCOPY to use SnapShot, TimeFinder, or FlashCopy to quickly copy data tracks.

FDRCRYPT

Enhances all backups and restores to optionally encrypt the backups using a public (symmetric) key. This protects the data on your backups (particularly off-site backups such as for disaster recovery) from unauthorized access. Various government, industry, and corporate regulations, in the USA and other countries, might require this protection. FDRCRYPT offers several encryption algorithms, including the current USA government standard—AES (Advanced Encryption Standard). FDRCRYPT-Backup-Encryption contains the complete documentation on FDRCRYPT, including how to modify new and existing backups and restores to use FDRCRYPT.
