Running RSS and BMC AMI Security products
You cannot run multiple RSS products within a single address space, as RSS does not support such an environment. The high-level manager (HLM) requires that you run only one RSS product within an address space.
High-level manager
The high-level manager (HLM) for RSS (RSSMAIN) manages RSS and RSS-based products. HLM is implemented across the RSS product suite to improve performance, reliability, availability, and serviceability for seamless operations. HLM is mandatory when you run SPM. HLM enables automated recovery and restart of the RSS products when an abend occurs.
When active, HLM performs the following functions:
- Sets up key work areas used in the management of the RSS product recovery environment
- Sets up a recovery environment to ensure an SVC Dump is captured if an abend occurs
- Sets up recovery resource manager routines to ensure critical clean up and resource release when a task or address space failure is encountered
- Provides for automated clean-up and restart of the product up to a default number of times during the day. You can modify the allowable count by using the RecoveryMax parameter.
The RecoveryMax parameter determines the number of times within a calendar day that the RSS HLM will recycle RSS products if an abend occurs during normal processing. The RSS HLM software automatically performs a cleanup and restarts the product to ensure availability. Valid values are 1 through 12, and the default value is 3.
Each of the RSS-based products has its own HLM:
- RSRSIHLM—BMC AMI Enterprise Connector for Illumio
- RSRSVHLM—BMC AMI Enterprise Connector for Venafi
- RSSPMHLM—BMC AMI Security Policy Manager
- RSPAMHLM—BMC AMI Security Privileged Access Manager
- RSSPRHLM—BMC AMI Security Self Service Password Reset
When you enable the HLM, it queries the defined parameter file for information on the product to be attached under the RSS framework
After HLM initializes, all steps from attaching RSS through specific product initialization, remain the same as before enabling HLM.
The HLMs are not enabled by default. Enabling HLM is mandatory for SPM and optional for the other RSS-based products. However, we recommend that you enable the HLM for all products, by specifying the JCL from step 6 of the Copying and configuring the JCL procedures to your STC procedure.
