Launching MainView Explorer

You can launch MainView Explorer in one of the following ways:

  • Perform a one-time download of a stand-alone package, which you can deploy locally or remotely. You can then configure it to create one or more MainView Explorer sessions.
The stand-alone package also includes a custom mini-JRE built from the latest OpenJDK, so you must install Java separately on your PC.
  • Use Java Web Start in your browser to launch individual MainView Explorer sessions that are saved as shortcuts to your desktop. Make sure that you have Java 8 already installed on your PC.

This topic contains the following sections:

Before you begin

Before you launch MainView Explorer, make sure that the Host Server is running. For more information, see Starting-and-stopping-the-Host-Server.

Warning

Important

To run MainView Explorer in secure mode (HTTPS) using IBM AT-TLS, make sure that the Host Server is configured to support the IBM AT-TLS policy and you have selected the Host Server configured with the ATTLS parameter check box, while launching MainView Explorer.

If the Host Server is not configured to support AT-TLS and you have selected the Host Server configured with the ATTLS parameter check box, then MainView Explorer does not work and you might get unexpected results.

To launch MainView Explorer from the stand-alone package

  1. Open any browser and enter the URL: http://host:port/mveload to download the stand-alone package.
    • For host, use the IP address or name of the system on which the Host Server is running.
    • For port, use the value specified for the PORT parameter in the Host Server startup procedure. For more information, see Creating-the-Host-Server-startup-procedure.
  2. Press Enter.
The MainView Explorer download page appears.
  3. Click Download to begin downloading the stand-alone package, mveimage.exe.
  4. Save the file to the directory from which you want to run MainView Explorer:
    • If prompted to Run or Save the file, click the arrow next to Save and select Save As. Browse to the location that you want and click Save.
    • If the file is saved automatically, open your Downloads folder and move the file to the required location.
  5. Double-click the file to extract the mveimage folder and its contents.
The README file in the mveimage folder describes the manual process for setting up run files and an optional desktop shortcut icon. The mveSetup.bat file in the mveimage folder, runs the setup process automatically, prompting you only for your host and port parameters.
  6. Double-click the mveSetup.bat file to begin the automated process.
A command is generated to launch MVE with your parameters. Following is an example of the command with your parameters (shown in bold):
    \bin\java -Xmx1024m -Dsun.java2d.uiScale=1 -m com.bmc.mve sysa 3940
This command is placed in the runmve.bat file and also in a desktop shortcut icon, if you so choose.
  7. To launch MVE, double-click the runmve.bat (console messages shown), the startmve.bat file (console messages minimized), or the new desktop shortcut icon (if generated).
The MainView Explorer logon screen appears and prompts you to log on. To start your MainView Explorer session, see Logging-on-to-MainView-Explorer.
Success

Tips

  • To download the stand-alone package to a shared network drive, perform steps 15 of this procedure, and launch MainView Explorer from that location. Launch options include:
    • Specifying a path to the shared BAT file that you can enter in a command prompt. For example,
      z:\mveimage\runmve.
    • Specifying your own BAT file containing a simple path or a path with parameters that you can tailor to fit your needs. For example,
      z:\mveimage\bin\javaw -Xmx1024m -Dsun.java2d.uiScale=1 -m com.bmc.mve   sysa 3940.
  • In the future, you can continue to launch MainView Explorer from the BAT file in the mveimage folder or you can create a desktop shortcut to the file instead. For more information about creating a desktop shortcut with parameters that you can modify at runtime, see the createShortcut.txt file in the mveimage folder.

To launch MainView Explorer using Java Web Start

  1. In any browser and enter the following URL: http://host:port/mve.
    • For host, use the IP address or name of the system on which the Host Server is running.
    • For port, use the value specified for the PORT parameter in the Host Server startup procedure. For more information, see Creating-the-Host-Server-startup-procedure.
  2. Press Enter.
A web page appears with two launch buttons: one for MainView Explorer and one for MainView Explorer Viewer.
  3. To run MainView Explorer in secure mode (HTTPS) using IBM AT-TLS, make sure that you have already configured the Host Server properly and selected the Host Server configured with the ATTLS parameter check box.
  4. Click the launch button for MainView Explorer.
A new window opens and prompts you to log on. To start your MainView Explorer session, see Logging-on-to-MainView-Explorer.
