Systems recovery boost control

Relevant to you?

System Recovery Boost Control enables you to control which BMC AMI Ops Automation for Batch ThruPut managed batch jobs may be selected during IPL Boost, Recovery Process Boost, and Shutdown Boost.

IPL boost

During IPL Boost, the LPAR capacity may increase greatly, so that much more work can be run. This is particularly true of sub-capacity IBM CPC models where the CPs do not run at true full speed except during System Recovery Boost.

When the IPL Boost period is over and the capacity drops, this can cause a sudden overload condition if you are running more workload than normal capacity allows.

By using System Recovery Boost Control options, you can constrain the selection of BMC AMI Ops Automation for Batch ThruPut-managed batch jobs as the end of the IPL Boost approaches and avoid overloading.

Recovery process boost

The duration of a Recovery Process Boost is no longer than 5 minutes and is often much shorter.

To prevent this short burst of additional capacity from resulting in over initiation when the boost period is over, you can specify that only certain work should be selected when the boost period is almost over.

Warning

Important

During a System Recovery Boost, WLM ignores the maximum capacity specification on any Resource Group. Automated Capacity Management (ACM) Service Classes are intended to be defined as belonging to Resource Groups with defined maximums. Therefore, by default, during a Recovery Process Boost, no jobs that will immediately be assigned to an ACM Service Class will be selected. If necessary, you can allow these jobs to be selected by selecting the appropriate option in Automated Capacity Management Configuration.

Shutdown boost

System Recovery Boost Control options allow you to specify that once the operator triggers Shutdown Boost, BMC AMI Ops Automation for Batch ThruPut is to automatically constrain the selection of managed batch jobs in preparation for system shutdown.

You may specify that only certain work should be selected for an initial period after the Shutdown Boost begins. For example, you may allow very quick jobs and the highest priority work to continue to be selected, knowing that they will not run for very long.

Regardless of whether you define an initial period, you probably will want to specify that BMC AMI Ops Automation for Batch ThruPut should automatically stop all managed batch job selection as the shutdown progresses. System Recovery Boost Control enables you to implement this easily.

How does it work?

You must be running on a configuration that supports System Recovery Boost and have configured z/OS to enable it.

You specify the constraints to be automatically implemented by BMC AMI Ops Automation for Batch ThruPut in the SLM Policy.

You optionally supply the length of time in seconds at the end of the IPL Boost during which you want to constrain selection of managed batch jobs. You may now elect to either stop selection of these jobs entirely, or restrict selection to jobs designated as Quick Jobs (see the section on the Quick Jobs elective feature earlier in this manual) and/or jobs of at least a specified importance (Batch Importance for General Services jobs and Production Importance for Production Services jobs).

Warning

Important

During the IPL Boost time that precedes this, there are no job selection constraints. If you want to constrain job selection for the entire IPL Boost, specify 3600 seconds, which is the length of the entire IPL Boost (1 hour).

You may also define the length of the initial Shutdown Boost period in seconds. You now choose to either stop selection of managed batch jobs entirely or restrict selection to Quick Jobs and/or jobs of a least a specified importance.

You can elect to stop all selection of managed batch jobs for the remainder of the Shutdown Boost.

Optionally, supply the length of time in seconds at the end of the Recovery Process Boost during which you want to constrain job selection. As with the other classes of boost, you many now elect to stop job selection entirely or restrict selection to Quick Jobs and/or jobs of at least a specified importance.

Setup considerations

In the SLM Policy you specify the lengths of the ending period of IPL Boost and the initial period of Shutdown Boost, and the associated job selection constraints. Note that the default values effectively specify no actions during either boost.
