The single-phase process

During the single-phase process (also known as the three-way merge process), the Recovery utility reads the appropriate change records from the system or recovery log and sorts them into relative byte address (RBA) order.

RBA is the record order on the image copy and change accumulation data sets. The Recovery utility merges the change accumulation and sorted log records into the appropriate blocks it reads from the input image copy. It then writes the merged blocks to the database data set.

A timestamp recovery can also be performed to recover the database to a previous point in time instead of recovering the database with all updates applied. The selected point in time does not need to be a valid recovery point as defined by DBRC. Any time can be used, including times when the database was allocated and being updated. In-flight updates at the time of recovery will not be applied. Logic errors in application programs often cause databases to be corrupted. Timestamp recovery can be used to recreate the database prior to the point in time that the errors were introduced by the failing program.
