TrueSight Operations Management overview

TrueSight Operations Management enables IT departments to monitor performance and availability of the infrastructure and applications that comprise their services, monitor events coming from the infrastructure devices, and monitor transactions from the applications that enable the services they deliver. The following topics describe the major components of this product.

Overview of TrueSight Operations Management components

The TrueSight console provides the interface for monitoring and diagnosing failures and for configuring the TrueSight Presentation Server that consumes information from the following component products:

Events and performance data from TrueSight Infrastructure Management
Active applications and performance data from TrueSight App Visibility Manager
Synthetic transactions and performance data generated by the TrueSight Synthetic Monitor (TEA) Agent
End-user monitoring dashboard data obtained from BMC Real End User Experience Monitoring Software Edition
Data mining and analytics engine that processes and delivers real-time insights into mission-critical data from IT Data Analytics

TrueSight Operations Management delivers holistic views of the IT enterprise from which all users ensure the health of the environment and ensure that Service Level Agreements are met. TrueSight console overview

The following table summarizes the main features of the TrueSight console:

Console feature	Use
Dashboard	Executives and IT Operations personnel use dashboards to monitor the environment from a specialized view, such as a set of applications or performance graphs related to a critical offering or customer.
Monitoring	IT Operations personnel use the monitoring views to monitor the infrastructure and application health.
Configuration	Solution Administrators and specialists configure the data collected from the component products and the applications monitored.
Administration	Solution Administrators configure the component products and integrations to the Presentation Server. The administration functions also include role-based access control to data and features.

Infrastructure health monitoring

IT Operations uses event, device, and group views to monitor infrastructure health and respond to critical events. From events, IT Operations personnel can perform probable cause analysis and access additional Infrastructure Management consoles to perform further investigative actions.

Application health monitoring

IT Operations and specialists use application monitoring to observe the performance and health of active applications, to perform diagnostics, and to trace application transactions. Specialists responsible for understanding how applications will behave before introducing changes in production might generate synthetic transactions to predict application performance and health.

TrueSight Presentation Server overview

The TrueSight Presentation Server hosts the web-based TrueSight console functions and consumes data from various TrueSight products to provide a consolidated set of views for monitoring the infrastructure, real and synthetic applications, and capacity planning. In addition to data presentation, the TrueSight Presentation Server performs functions such as role-based access control and data management functions such as storage and persistence.

TrueSight Presentation core service

The core service is the main server process that communicates with the data providers and datastore functions. Apache Tomcat is embedded in the core service.

TrueSight Presentation Server structure

The following diagram illustrates the relationship of the TrueSight Presentation Server functions.

Layer	Description
application	The application layer consists of all the functions that are displayed in the TrueSight console and the Application Programming Interface (APIs) that communicate with the platform layer APIs.
platform	The platform layer consists of functions such as messaging, RESTful Web services, role-based access control (RBAC), logging, clustering for high availability, and other core functions that make up the Presentation Server.
data store	The data store layer functions include data caching and data persistence: Data caching - The TrueSight Presentation Server uses Infinispan as the caching service for caching the entities created in the TrueSight console and the entities received from the data providers, such as Meta (managed object definition), managed objects, devices, events from the cell, and groups. Data persistence - The Presentation Server utilizes the following software to store and persist information: PostgreSQL Server - Stores information such as data provider servers, devices, groups, application model entities and relationships, and Central Monitoring Administration entities such, as TrueSight Presentation Servers, and Integration Service hosts and clusters. Elasticsearch with Lucene - Persists and searches the events received from the data providers.

Integrated system authentication with Remedy Single Sign-On

Remedy Single Sign-On (Remedy SSO) is an authentication system that enables users to enter their credentials only once for authenticating in a multi-software environment. Upon authentication, users automatically gain access to all applications that are integrated with Remedy SSO. In TrueSight Presentation Server, Remedy SSO supports only the following authentication types:

Local
LDAP/AD
SAMLv2
Kerberos
OpenID
Certificate-based

Based on your organization's requirements, you can configure any of the authentication types to authenticate the users for TrueSight product components. To configure and use these authentication types you must do the following:

Install the Remedy Single Sign-On server and configure it with an authentication server such as LDAP/AD or SAMLv2.
Create the required tenants (realms), user groups, and users on the Remedy Single Sign-On Admin console.
Integrate the Remedy Single Sign-On server with the TrueSight Presentation Server during the TrueSight Presentation Server installation or upgrade.
