Understanding an unknown node in an automatically discovered application model

The functionality of some load balancing servers result in an unknown node in the application model of automatically discovered applications.

Issue

In the application model of an automatically discovered application, the model displays a node named UNKNOWN.

Probable cause

Some application use a load balancing server between the user and the monitored application server. Usually, operations are distributed from the load balancing server to application servers, and App Visibility creates a group for the application servers.

If the load balancing server returns the server address to the client, instead of passing requests to a target server, then the client sends the request directly to the target server. In this situation, the load balancing server is displayed as an unknown node in the application model.

Resolution

No action is required.
