Preparing Windows computers for Infrastructure Management

Perform the following tasks before launching the TrueSight Infrastructure Management installer on a Windows computer.

Note

BMC recommends that you have a dedicated host computer for TrueSight Infrastructure Management and do not install any other applications on it.

General preparations

Item

Task

System requirements

Ensure that the target computers for TrueSight Infrastructure Management meet or exceed the system requirements listed in System-requirements-and-product-compatibility-for-Infrastructure-Management and in the following sections.

Port 80

Ensure that port 80 is available for installing the Apache web server. If any other application is using the port, change the port allocation to make the port 80 available for TrueSight Infrastructure Management installation. On the system where you want to host the TrueSight Infrastructure Management Server or the Integration Service, verify the TCP control port (port 80) availability by running the following command from a command line:

netstat -a | grep "LISTENING" | grep "80"

After TrueSight Infrastructure Management has been installed, you can change the port for the Apache web server to free port 80 for use by your other application. For instructions, see Ports used by Infrastructure Management.

Installation media

BMC Software recommends that you install TrueSight Infrastructure Management from a local copy of the installation image and not from a network drive. Installing from a network drive can cause delays in completing the installation.

Host Name

For successful installation, ensure that the host name or the cluster name does not contain an underscore (_).

Anti-virus

Disable any anti-virus software on each host computer on which you are installing a component, or exclude the TrueSight Infrastructure Management installation directory from virus scanning. Disable the following programs on the target computer:

  • Virus scanning programs

Virus scanners can block the SMTP port and lock files that the installation program needs to configure the mail server and perform the installation. You can enable the virus scanning programs after the installation is completed.
  • Third party firewall protection programs, such as McAfee Host Intrusion Prevention Service (HIPS)

HIPS can block access to ports that are used by the installation program during installation and by the TrueSight Infrastructure Management Server at run time. You must leave HIPS disabled after the installation is completed, or configure it to allow inbound and outbound communications of TrueSight Infrastructure Management processes. You must reboot the computer if you disable or configure the service.

Other applications

Close all applications that are running and do not perform other installation or configuration activities during the TrueSight Infrastructure Management installation process.

Preinstallation checklist

Item

Requirements

Installation user

Ensure that the user running the installation program has the following rights and permissions on the target computer:

  • Read and write permissions on the installation directory
  • Read and write permissions on the Windows folder of the disk drive where the operating system is installed. For example, C:\Windows.
  • Create access to registry, service, and task schedule

Installation on European locals

While installing TrueSight Infrastructure Management on Microsoft Windows as an Administrator user in European locales (French, German, and Spanish), ensure that you do not change the default localized Administrators group name. TrueSight Infrastructure Management installation works with only the default localized Administrators group names. For example:

  • English: Administrators
  • German: Administratoren
  • French: Administrateurs
  • Spanish: Administradores

Windows patch level

Ensure that the target computer has the most recent patch level for supported Windows operating systems. If it does not, use Microsoft Update (or Windows Update) to update it. For supported versions, see System-requirements-and-product-compatibility-for-Infrastructure-Management.

Users with administrator privileges

If you want users with administrator privileges (not the Administrator user) to access the TrueSight Infrastructure Management Server after the installation, you must disable User Access Control (UAC) and turn off Data Execution Prevention (DEP) for install.cmd before you install the server.

Installation directory

Do not install TrueSight Infrastructure Management Server in a root directory (for example C: or D:), on a shared drive, or in the Documents and Settings folder.

Perl

Perl should not be installed on the target computer where TrueSight Infrastructure Management Server is being installed. You can ensure this using the path environment variable.

Temporary directory

Clean your temporary directories. Start with the temporary folder in your home folder. Also clean the %Temp%, %Tmp% directories, and C:\WINNT\Temp or C:\Windows\Temp if present. You might not be able to delete all the files, but BMC recommends that you remove any files or directories that begin with TrueSight or Infrastructure Management.

Terminal services

If Terminal Services is enabled, configure it to save installation log files after the installation is complete; otherwise, the log files will be deleted. For more information, see To configure the required Terminal Server options.

Windows short path

Enable Windows short path configuration

Firewall

Configure your firewall to allow TCP port 7, which is used to communicate with other TrueSight Infrastructure Management hosts.

IPv6 host

If you are installing the TrueSight Infrastructure Management Server on an IPv6 Windows host, ensure that the IP helper service is started.

Anti-malware or antivirus

Version of the antivirus definition must be 1.235.2373.0 or later.

To configure the Terminal Server options on Windows

If you are planning to install Remedy SSO on a host computer with Windows, configure the following Terminal Server options that pertain to temporary folders. Doing this enables you to run the installation utility through a Terminal Services connection or a remote desktop session.

Note

  • You need to configure the Terminal Server options only once on a host computer running on Windows.
  • You do not have to configure the options if you are planning to install Remedy SSO on running on Linux or you are reinstalling a TrueSight product on the same host computer running on Windows.
  1. On the host computer, from Start, type Run and press Enter, and type gpedit.msc and press Enter.
The Local Group Policy Editor is opened.
  2. From the Local Group Policy Editor, navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host > Temporary folder.
  3. Double-click the following options and set each to Enabled:
    1. Do not delete temp folder upon exit.
    2. Do not use temporary folders per session.
  4. Back up the Windows registry and avoid receiving notification about Terminal Server configuration at the time of product installation:
    1. On the host computer, from Start, type Run and press Enter, and type regedit and press Enter.
      The Registry Editor is opened.
    2. From the Registry Editor, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server.
    3. Set the value for PerSessionTempDir and DeleteDeleteTempDirsOnExit to 0.

      Note

You can revert these changes after you complete the installation process.

  5. Restart the host computer.

Preinstallation requirements check by installer

When you start the TrueSight Infrastructure Management Server installation, the installer checks to ensure that the target computer is configured based on the recommended settings. The installer checks the environment and reports a status of OK or Not OK for each configuration variable that it checks.

For Windows, the following pre-install checks are run:

Antivirus configuration

Before installing TrueSight Infrastructure Management, disable the on-demand scan of the antivirus system.
