Installation process overview


The TrueSight Operations Management installation process requires preinstallation, installation, and post-installation work.

Note

If you are installing the TrueSight Operations Management components as a proof-of-concept installation for testing purposes, refer to the guidelines for installing on a single computer.

Before starting the installation process, refer to the installation process diagram and the reference table that follows it.

Prepare for the TrueSight Operations Management installation

Because of the many components that need to be installed for the TrueSight console, it is important to review and complete the preinstallation steps.

Complete the installation worksheets, downloading the required files for installation,and the preparations for installing the various TrueSight Operations Management components.

Installation

BMC recommends installing the TrueSight Operations Management components in the following order.

Install the RemedySingle Sign-On

Remedy Single Sign-On server enables users to present credentials only once for authentication, and subsequently be automatically authenticated by every BMC product that is integrated into the system.

Must be installed before the TrueSight Presentation Server.

During the TrueSight Presentation Server installation, you must enter the Remedy Single Sign-On server host name, port, and administrator password.

If you are deploying Remedy Single Sign-On for using TrueSight Operations Management only, BMC recommends using the TrueSight installer instead of using the Remedy installer.

Install the TrueSight Presentation Server

The Presentation Server receives and analyzes data that is displayed in the TrueSight console.

The TrueSight console displays service availability and performance management of the IT environment. It also combines event management, impact management, performance monitoring, and application modeling in a seamless solution for physical, virtual, and cloud environments.

As the hub of the operations management environment, you install the Presentation Server before any of the licensed components.

Install entitled licensed component products

Install the TrueSight Infrastructure Management

Infrastructure Management is an integrated platform for service availability and performance management of your IT environment. It combines event management, service impact management, performance monitoring, and data analytics (including baselines, abnormality detection, and Root Cause Analysis algorithms) in a single seamless solution for physical, virtual, and cloud environments.

Install the TrueSight Infrastructure Management server before Integration Service and Administrator console.

Install the App Visibility server components

The App Visibility server comprises the following components: 

  • Portal
  • Collector
  • Proxy

The server receives and analyzes data from the end user's browser, from the App Visibility agents for Java and .NET that are installed on web application servers, and from the synthetic Transaction Execution Adapter (TEA) Agent.

Typically, the App Visibility environment uses a separate computer for the portal, one or more collectors, and one or more proxies. To set up a high-availability environment, you must install each component on a separate computer.

Install the portal before the other server components because the collector and proxy reference the portal during installation.

Install the proxies in the network's demilitarized zone (DMZ).

Install the App Visibility agents for monitoring Java and .NET application servers

The App Visibility agents for Java and agents for .NET monitor the performance and availability of applications running on application servers. Agents also monitor metrics of the server, such as CPU and memory use.

Install an agent on each application server of the application that you want to monitor.

The agent installation references the portal.

Install TrueSight Synthetic Monitor

and

Synthetic Transaction Execution Adapter (TEA) Agent

The TEA Agent monitors the performance and reliability of worldwide applications through synthetic (also called robotic) transactions.

An application specialist uses Silk Performer to record or author .ltz scripts that simulate user transactions. The scripting utility also serves as an execution module to run scripts on the computer with the TEA Agent.

Install Silk Performer before you install the TEA Agent.

Install the TEA Agent and enter connection details for the App Visibility server.

Install BMC Real End User Experience Monitoring Software Edition


The Real End User Experience Monitoring Software Edition provides end user-centric performance monitoring that helps departments ensure the quality and availability of web-based applications, determine whether applications meet service-level objectives, and proactively find and fix problems.

Install the Real End User Experience Monitoring components.

Post-Installation

Register the TrueSight Operations Management components

After you install TrueSight Presentation Server and Remedy Single Sign-On, you must register the component products as data providers to the Presentation Server. This registration process enables the Presentation Server to receive data from its component parts. You can register component products as you add them, or when you finish adding all components.

Configure components in the TrueSight console.

Integrate the TrueSight console with other BMC Products

Integrate TrueSight Presentation Server with other BMC products by using a post-installation configuration utility that you access from the TrueSight console.

Integrating with BMC Products

Installing TrueSight Operations Management components on a single computer

If you are installing the TrueSight Operations Management components on a single computer, use the following installation guidelines to avoid conflicts in the port numbers between the components.

  1. Install the TrueSight Infrastructure Management components with default ports. 
  2. Install the Remedy Single Sign-On.
  3. (Windows) Stop the Remedy Single Sign-On Server service and delete the extract folder from the temp directory.
  4. (Windows) Start the Remedy Single Sign-On Server service.
  5. Install the TrueSight Presentation Server using the ports that have not already been allocated to Infrastructure Management Server or Remedy Single Sign-On Server. 
  6. Register the TrueSight Infrastructure Management Server with the TrueSight Presentation Server. 
  7. Install the App Visibility server components using the ports that have not already been allocated to Infrastructure Management Server, Remedy Single Sign-On Server, or TrueSight Presentation Server.
  8. Register the App Visibility Portal with the TrueSight Presentation Server.
