Configuring notification rules
This topic provides instructions for creating, editing, viewing, enabling, disabling, and deleting notification rules. To understand the concept of notification rules and how they can be useful, see Managing-notification-rules.
To create a notification rule
- Log in to the TrueSight console, and go to Configuration > Notification Rules.
- Do one of the following:
- Click the action menu
next to Notification Rules, click Create Notification Rule
.
- Click Create Notification Rule
.
- Click the action menu
- Specify a unique rule name (alphanumeric string) and an optional description.
- Select the Infrastructure Management server on which you want to create the notification rule.
- Select one of the following rule types:
- Basic: Basic rules are applicable to intelligent events and external events. You can choose monitor types for intelligent events while creating basic rules.
- Advanced: Advanced rules are applicable only to Intelligent events. You can choose monitor instances and attributes for monitor types while creating advanced rules.
Set the time range or schedule for the notification rule. By default, Time Range is recurring and does not have a start and an end date. Whereas while creating a schedule, you can specify one-time or recurring options, and a specific start and an end date.
(Optional) Do one of the following to specify the filtering conditions to select the Infrastructure Management server groups:
Click Add Group Filter, and specify the group filtering conditions. You can choose one of the following options, and click Save.
- No Filter: Notification rule is applicable to all monitors
- Include Selected Groups: Notification rule is applicable to the selected groups
- Exclude Selected Groups: Notification rule is not applicable to the selected groups but applicable to all the other groups in the list
- Click
next to Group Filter, and modify the group filtering conditions, and click Save.
Note: When you edit Event Type Filter in the next step, the monitor types of these selected groups will be displayed in Event Type Filter. You can define the event selection criteria for the monitor types that are listed.
Click
next to Event Type Filter, and specify the event selection criteria based on the notification rule type as explained in the following section, and save the event filtering condition:
- Specify one or both of the following notification actions:
- Send Email: Do the following:
- (Optional) Enter the sender's email address.
Use one or both of the following options to enter the recipient's email address:
- Email Id: Use this option to enter an individual email address:
- Enter the email id of the recipient.
- Select one of the following message formats for the email:
- ASCII - Full Page
- ASCII - One-sentence Summary
- HTML/GIF - Full Page
- Click Add.
Email Group: To enter the email group details, select an email group from the drop-down list, and click Add.
- Send SNMP Trap
Enter an SNMP server host name or IP address.
- Send Email: Do the following:
- (Optional) Click Customize Event Text to customize the email subject and body. If you do not choose to customize the event text, global event text settings will be applicable to the email subject and body.
- By default, the notification rule is enabled and ready to be processed immediately. Optionally, you can disable the rule.
- Save the notification rule.
To edit a notification rule on the TrueSight console
Do the following to edit a notification rule on the TrueSight console:
- On the Configuration > Notification Rules page, from the notification rule
action menu, select Edit.
- Change the configuration details provided while creating the notification rule and click Save. You can modify all the details except the rule name and the associated Infrastructure Management server details.
To view a list of notification rules
On the Configuration > Notification Rules page, select the Infrastructure Management server to view a list of associated notification rules:
- By default, the notification rules are sorted by Rule Name. To sort on a different column, click the column name.
- The Infrastructure Management server can immediately process the notification rule that is enabled. To enable or disable a notification rule, see enabling or disabling a notification rule.
The Owner displays the user name associated with a notification rule. Initially, the user who creates the notification rule is the owner of the rule.
To change the owner for a notification rule
You can change the owner associated with a notification rule, if you are a user with admin privileges.
Do the following:
- On the Configuration > Notification Rules page, from the notification rule
action menu, select Edit.
- Locate the Owner field, and select a user from the drop-down list.
- Save the notification rule.
To enable or disable a notification rule
On the Configuration > Notification Rules page, from the notification rule action menu, select Enable or Disable.
The enabled notification rules can be processed immediately by the Infrastructure Management server.
To delete a notification rule
On the Configuration > Notification Rules page, from the notification rule action menu, select Delete.
The Infrastructure Management server deletes the notification rule and refreshes the Configuration > Notification Rules page.
