Managing Integration Services

Configure an Integration Service and add it to an Infrastructure Management server to stream performance and event data from PATROL Agents to the Infrastructure Management servers.

You can set the Integration Service as a staging Integration Service or add it to an existing Integration Service cluster as a data collection Integration Service.

Ensure that you have the required permissions to configure and manage Integration Services. For details, see Configuring Infrastructure Management to monitor and manage your infrastructure systems.

Best practice

  • Do not configure or add Integration Services from the Administrator console. Add them from the TrueSight console.
  • Always provide a meaningful name for each Integration Service so that it can be properly identified in the environment. For example, include the network domain name where the Integration Service is installed.
  • Use the default configurations for the following properties:
    • Connection to Infrastructure Management Server
    • Port number
    • Event Destination
  • Consider the following points when you update the Event Destination property:
    • In most environments, avoid using the Infrastructure Management Server Cell option. If you use this option, all events that are sent to the Integration Service from the PATROL Agents are directly forwarded to the Infrastructure Management server. By doing so, event pre-processing actions such as filtering, correlation, and so on cannot be done before the events arrive in the Infrastructure Management server.
    • If you are configuring an Integration Service that is to be used as the third or fourth Integration Service in a cluster, use the Cell Name option.
  • If you want to scale out your current Integration Service infrastructure or you want to monitor more devices but the existing Integration Service has limited infrastructure resources, then perform the following steps:

    1. Configure a new data collection Integration Service (A) on a server that has better system configuration than the current Integration Service (B).
    2. Stop the current Integration Service (B).

    3. Convert the current Integration Service (B) to a staging Integration Service.

      Note: The PATROL Agents that were connected to the current Integration Service (B) continue to collect data. However, the data is not sent to the Infrastructure Management server because the Integration Service (B) is now a staging one.

    4. Start the current Integration Service (B).
    5. Define a staging policy to set the newly setup data collection Integration Service (A) as the PATROL Agent phone home.
    6. Configure the new PATROL Agents to connect to the staging Integration Service (B).
    7. Enable the staging policy.

Integration Service properties

Property

Description

Name

Name of the Integration Service. The name must be unique for each server to which you want to add the Integration Service.

Infrastructure Management Server

Name of the server to which you want to add the Integration Service.

DNS Name / IP Address

Name or the IP address of the host where the Integration Service runs.

Note: As a best practice, enter the FQDN (fully qualified domain name) for the host.

Connection to Infrastructure Management Server

Communication protocol between the Integration Service and the Infrastructure Management server. The supported connection types are as follows:

  • Direct access using TCP/IP
  • Direct access using SSL TCP/IP

If you select the Direct access using SSL TCP/IP option, you must add the pronet.apps.agent.conntype=ssltcp line in the custom/conf/pronet.conf file and then restart the Integration Service.

Port Number

Port number through which the Integration Service listens to the Infrastructure Management server. The default port number is 12124.

Event Destination

Destination cell where you want the Integration Service to send the events that are received from the PATROL Agents. The supported destination types are as follows:

  • Use Current Integration Service Settings - Indicates that the events must be sent to the cell that is configured in the Integration Service. One of the following two cell configurations is possible:
    • Cell that is installed with the Integration Service
    • The Infrastructure Management server cell to which the Integration Service is connected
  • Cell Name - Indicates that the events must be sent to a remote cell. For this option, specify the name of the remote cell.
  • Infrastructure Management Server Cell – Indicates that the events must be sent to the cell of the connected Infrastructure Management server:


      • Cell that is installed with the Integration Service. This is the default configuration.
      • Cell that is associated with the connected Infrastructure Management server

Notes:


    • Event settings on the PATROL Agent override this property. For example, on a PATROL Agent, if the specified event destination is a cell, the Integration Service sends events to the specified cell, irrespective of the option selected in this property.
    • Events are routed through the Integration Service to the Infrastructure Management server cell or the remote cell using port number 3183 (default port) or the Staging Adapter port number that you specified while installing the Integration Service.
    • BMC recommends that the PATROL Agent pconfig variable /EventSetup/Configuration/ForwardEventsToIS be set to Yes. For information about pconfig variables, see the BMC PATROL Agent Reference Manual.


Important: Ensure that the mcell.dir file on the Integration Service server contains an entry for the selected cell. If you have installed only the Integration Service and not the cell, the mcell.dir file does not exist. Create the mcell.dir file in the following directory path:

  • (Microsoft Windows) integrationServiceInstallationDirectory\BPPMAgent\Agent\server\etc
  • (Solaris or Linux) integrationServiceInstallationDirectory/BPPMAgent/Agent/server/etc

Also, create the %MCELL_HOME% environment variable with the following value:

  • (Microsoft Windows) integrationServiceInstallationDirectory\BPPMAgent\Agent\server
  • (Solaris or Linux) integrationServiceInstallationDirectory/BPPMAgent/Agent/server

Configure as Staging Integration Service

Enables you to configure the Integration Service as a staging Integration Service.
A staging Integration Service is an interim Integration Service that is used as the initial phone home for PATROL Agents. The final phone home settings are set for the PATROL Agents through the staging policies.
Notes:

  • An Integration Service that is part of an Integration Service cluster cannot be configured as a staging Integration Service.
  • The Integration Service running on an Infrastructure Management Server cannot be configured as a staging Integration Service.

Integration Service Cluster Name

Name of the Integration Service cluster to which you want to add the Integration Service.

To add an Integration Service to an Integration Management server

  1. Log on to the TrueSight console.
  2. In the navigation pane, expand Configuration and select Managed Devices. 

  3. In the Managed Devices page, click the Main action menu and select Add Integration Service.

    Tip

    If you know the Infrastructure Management server to which you want to add the Integration Service, select the Server from the list, then click the Main action menu and select Add Integration Service. The Infrastructure Management server information is automatically populated in the Add Integration Service page.

  4. In the Add Integration Service page, select the Infrastructure Management server to which you want to add the Integration Service.
  5. Specify values for the Integration Service properties.
  6. Click Save.

To modify the Integration Service properties

  1. Log on to the TrueSight console.
  2. In the navigation pane, expand Configuration and select Managed Devices. 
  3. In the Managed Devices page, expand the Infrastructure Management server that has the Integration Service to be modified.
  4. If the Integration Service is in connected state, disconnect it.
  5. Click Integration Service action menu, and select Edit. 
  6. In the Edit Integration Service page, modify the Integration Service properties.
  7. Click Save.

To remove an Integration Service from an Infrastructure Management server

  1. Log on to the TrueSight console.
  2. In the navigation pane, expand Configuration and select Managed Devices. 
  3. In the Managed Devices page, expand the Infrastructure Management server that has the Integration Service to be deleted.
  4. If the Integration Service is in connected state, disconnect it.

  5. Click Integration Service action menu, and select Delete.

    Note

    The deleted Integration Service is automatically removed from all the clusters that it belongs to.
