Upgrading to Infrastructure Management Server 10.0 on Microsoft Windows

This section explains how to upgrade BMC ProactiveNet Server 9.5.xx, 9.6.xx, or Infrastructure Management Server 9.6.xx to Infrastructure Management Server 10.0.x on Microsoft Windows.

To upgrade from BMC ProactiveNet versions earlier than 9.5, see Phased-upgrades-from-earlier-versionsThe [confluence_note] macro is a standalone macro and it cannot be used inline. Click on this message for details.

Before you begin

Before you start the upgrade, ensure that you have performed all the tasks listed in Prerequisites-for-Infrastructure-Management-Server-upgrade.

To upgrade Infrastructure Management Server on Microsoft Windows

  1. Access the installation program by using one of these methods:
  2. Extract the contents of the zipped distribution file to an appropriate directory on the computer where the BMC TrueSight Infrastructure Management Server will be installed.
  3. Double-click install.cmd.
Important Ensure that you run the installer using install.cmd and not setup.exe.
  4. On the Welcome page, click Next.
  5. On the license agreement page, select I agree to the terms of the license agreement, and click Next.

The upgrade routine checks the system to see that it meets the upgrade prerequisites. It also checks for a current installation of ProactiveNet Server 9.5.xx, 9.6.xx, or Infrastructure Management Server 9.6.xx. It displays any errors that it discovers. You can correct them and then return to the upgrade sequence.

  6. On the TrueSight Presentation Server Integration and Registration page, if you want to migrate Infrastructure Management data to the TrueSight Presentation Server at the time of upgrade, select Yes.

    Single or Child Server

You must select No for a child or single server upgrade and perform the post-upgrade steps to manually integrate the Infrastructure Management Server with the Presentation Server.

If you select Yes (not recommended), you can encounter the registration issues on the Presentation Server. To resolve registration issues, see Troubleshooting.

    Central Server

BMC recommends that you select Yes for a central server upgrade.

If you select No, the central server will be upgraded as the child server, and you must manually register the Infrastructure Management Server with the TrueSight Presentation Server to successfully log in to the TrueSight Infrastructure Management. For more information, see Adding-and-editing-components.

You can choose to migrate the TrueSight Infrastructure Management Server data to the Presentation Server using the Migration utility. For more information about this process, see Migrating-the-Infrastructure-Management-policies-and-user-data-to-the-Presentation-Server.

    Field

    Description

    Presentation Server FQDN

The host name or Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) for the Presentation server.

    Presentation Server Port

The HTTPS connector port for the Tomcat Apache server. The default port is 443.

    Presentation Server User

The user name for the Presentation server.

    Presentation Server Password

The password for the Presentation server.

    Atrium SSO Server FQDN

The host name or Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) for the BMC Atrium SSO server.

    Atrium SSO Port

Use the default number (8443), or enter a new port number.

    Atrium SSO amadmin Password

The password for the Atrium SSO server. The default SSO administrator name is amadmin. This name is automatically created during installation of the BMC Atrium Single Sign-On authentication system.

    Atrium SSO Tenant

The name of the tenant defined in the BMC Atrium SSO server. The default tenant is BMCRealm. This value is case sensitive.

    Note

When migrating the data to the Presentation Server, ensure that the Central Server and Child Server are migrated to the same tenant; otherwise, the related configurations will not be applied to these servers.

    Note

When migrating the data to the Presentation Server, if you specify the valid tenant name, the Central Monitoring Administration policies with the GLOBAL, NO Tenant Associated, and the specified tenant name are migrated. Policies with unspecified tenants are not migrated, but exported to the exported_policies_failed_to_import folder located at the <installdirectory>/pw/pronto/lib/DataMigrator/exported_policies directory.

You can manually import these failed policies using the migration export_policies command line utility.

  7. In the Cloud-vista enabled environment, the Configuring Infrastructure Management environment deployment information screen is displayed. Provide the following details, and click Next.

Select any one of the following options based on your Infrastructure Management environment.

      • Single Server Environment Installation: Upgrades the Infrastructure Management Server as a standalone server.
      • Multiple Server Environment Installation: Upgrades the Infrastructure Management Server as following:
        • BMC TrueSight Infrastructure Management Central Server: Upgrades this instance as a central server.
        • BMC TrueSight Infrastructure Management Child Server: Enter the following Server Router details:

    Field

    Description

    Host Name/IP Address

FQDN name and IP address of the Central Server Router. FQDN name comprises the host name and the domain name.

    Protocol

Protocol with which to communicate to the Central Server Router. It can be either HTTP or HTTPS protocol.

    Port

Port number with which to communicate to the Central Server Router. The default HTTP port number is 80, and the default HTTPS port number is 443.

  8. On the Configuring KB Migration Path page, if you have already migrated customized KB definitions to the new standard 10.0 KB, select Yes, and browse to the path of the customized KB directory.

    Important

You must apply a re-propagate rule, which propagates all open events from the Infrastructure Management Server to the Presentation Server.

If you select Yes, you must apply this rule before proceeding with the upgrade.

If you select No, apply this rule after the upgrade is complete. BMC recommends that you apply this rule for all child server upgrades and a single server upgrade.

For more information about applying the re-propagate rule, see Knowledge Article KA427335 (Support logon ID required).

The file path should follow this hierarchy structure:
\topLevelDirectory\mergedKB\server\etc\cellName, where \server\etc\cellName is the standard subdirectory

    Warning

If you have KBs to migrate but have not done so, pause the upgrade process and migrate them before proceeding. See Migrating the configuration of cells.

During the upgrade, the routine copies the KB under the \mergedKB\server\etc\cellName path and overwrites the KB in the default installationDirectory\pw\server\etc\cellName path.

  9. On the Installation Preview page, click Install.

  10. Click Next.
  11. On the Installation Summary window, select View Logs to open the installation logs, or click Done to complete the upgrade to TrueSight Infrastructure Management Server 10.0. The installer launches the installation of BMC TrueSight Infrastructure Management Server Update 10.0.500.

    Note

After you successfully upgrade to Infrastructure Management Server, you can find the following two folders at installationDirectory\BMC Software (Microsoft Windows):

    • ProactiveNet9.5/ProactiveNet9.6—Contains the backup files of the earlier BMC ProactiveNet installation. You can manually delete them if you do not want them.
    • ProactiveNet—Contains the Infrastructure Management 10.0 installation files.
  12. On the TrueSight Infrastructure Management Update 10.0.500 Welcome page, click Next.
  13. On the license agreement page, select I agree to the terms of the license agreement, and click Next.
  14. On the Update Confirmation page, click Yes, and click Next.
ImportantAfter you confirm, the Infrastructure Management Server is stopped temporarily and then restarted automatically post-upgrade.
  15. On the Installation Preview page, review the information and click Previous to make changes, or click Install.
  16. After the update is complete, click View Log to view the log files and confirm that the update process was successful.
  17. Click Done to exit the installation wizard.

Note

During upgrade, the pronet.db log returns warning messages due to repetitive registration of monitors. You can ignore these warnings as they do not cause any problem to the upgrade.

Note

Review the installation logs for the mposter command warnings. If you find any such warnings, see Troubleshooting.
